These were adults who were supporting and profiting from the Nazis.

That was (in my opinion) a big part of the Nazis’ draw—making money. All of the top Nazis died very wealthy. Even those in the middle stood to make lots of money. Running factories with slave labor yields big profits.

I’m afraid I kinda agree with you. This guy is not Heydrich or Mengele. He’s a kid who, if he refuses the order, is himself shot.

The Nazis come in a poor third in the mass murder category. How many movies have been made about the two top contenders? Where is the Chinese or Russian Schindler? The actual perpetrators of the Katyn Forrest massacre were still receiving their pensions into the 1980s. Compare the Lidice massacre the incident at Horni Mostenice.  These trials for “crimes” committed by teenagers are getting old. They are not done in the pursuit of justice but to keep this issue alive. This is a good purpose but why neglect far greater crimes.

My father is now 90 and was too young to serve in the US Army in 1945.

They also stole the assets of the Jews they rounded up, and the Jews who escaped voluntarily in the 1930s did so leaving all their assets behind to be collected by the Nazis. I worked in Germany in a bank where the personnel office was a building that once had housed my great great uncle’s business. I never learned how the bank came to own it, but he left Germany in 1936 penniless.

He is a liar. The SS did not draft men into service. It was an elite unit that men first volunteered to join. Training was vigorous, much more so than the regular army. They graduated only once they pledged a rather debased oath to the Nazi party and to Adolf Hitler.

Given his lies, I have no sympathy for him.

When I was aged somewhere between 8 and 12, I was dropped with my brothers and our friends at the local movie theater for the 25 cent matinee. This was in the late 1950s or very early 1960s. We though we were going to see another John Wayne war movie or something like that. Instead we were "treated" to a film made by the SS medical units serving at one of the camps.

We saw them push meat hooks through the heel of a man, haul him up, and start to strip off his skin while he was still alive. After a nice spray of popcorn puke, we left.

On the way out the owner was passing out $1 bills, speaking something we couldn't understand over his crying. I had nightmares for years.

Schindler’s List is really tame, I assure you.

Speers was the only one to confess enthusiasm for the Reich. It was also very clear from German records that he never participated in decisions related to the treatment of prisoners, nor did he participate in building the camps or related equipment. Paperwork proved that the SS were always in charge of prison labor. A few Jewish people testified at his trial that they were still alive because Speers forced the SS to increase their rations where they worked.

I really can not understand the madness of WWII and the insanity of the lack of humanity at the time

I understand and felt the same way for many, many years. Having read the book, "Why They Kill" by Richard Rhodes, I understood that the process of violentization as described by maverick criminologist Lonnie Athens, could be applied on a societal level.

With that as basis I then happened to read "Hiltler's Willing Executioners" by Daniel Goldhagen which completely and satisfyingly answered the question. You will enjoy these reads I think as much as I did, and if you find anything wrong or dispute any of the ideas therein, I do hope you will message me with your thoughts and criticisms.

I would be remiss if I did not mention that Rhodes himself took the idea of violentization and wrote a book applying it to the holocaust, called “Masters of Death”. I have not read this book.

The question of a trial for this old old man is moot. Should he be punished for what he did so many decades ago?

The real trial for him (and for all of us) will come at death.

God will be the Judge of his life. Will Mr. Dey’s name be found in the Book of Life?

I hope so.

Near the end of the war, the SS drafted soldiers and did away with thier “racial purity” requirements.

They needed bodies.

“On the other hand, the SS were elites. I believe he was forced into the Wehrmacht, but to join the SS you had to have distinctions.”

By that time the SS was taking anyone and everyone - and not all were volunteers.

You could be a half-Jewish Nazi doctor who performed experiments on people in concentration camps: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Eppinger

You could be a Nazi spy and Jewish: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephanie_von_Hohenlohe

You could be a member of the SS and of Jewish descent:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emil_Maurice#Conflict_with_Himmler_over_Jewish_heritage

And then you have something like the reverse happening as well: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2008/aug/06/judaism.secondworldwar

When it comes to race and ethnicity things were often more complicated in Nazi Germany than some people realize.

But rebelling against this role and actively freeing them would have resulted in his death.

Would a 17 year old be expected to make such a sacrifice? Maybe if he was raised in a Christian home...

For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. Romans 5:7
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 15:12-13.
What a terrible position to put a young man in. What kind of life has this man lived? Has he been a good person? Has he been tormented all his life by what he did as a youth? I would want the answer to those questions, before I would be able to pass sentence on him. He wasn’t able to bring himself to refuse to cooperate with the Nazis, as a youth. Is he now willing to receive the punishment for his actions, or is he trying to find a way out? He should have turned himself in at the end of the war. But, again, can a teenager make such a decision as that?
And remember, George Soros was in a similar situation, and we all think he should be put in prison, executed, and go straight to hell. So, I guess what kind of human being this other man became, makes a difference. At least to me.

On the other hand, how many 17-20 year old American soldiers gave THEIR lives, in the war? And every one of them, though at least as afraid as this one was, made the ultimate sacrifice, because it was the right thing to do, because it had to be done, in order to win the war.

How hideous! Only an evil, devil possessed person could do such things! Hell truly hath enlarged its mouth to receive such as they were.

Early in the war this was true, but later in the war many were indeed drafted into the SS.
