I have made 22cal smoothbore zip-guns out of a old car antenna. To sight them you just bend the barrel until they shoot straight.. lol.

To do a proper ‘jug choke’ the over-bored portion of the barrel has to have a section of the barrel near the muzzle bored over the dia. of the muzzle.

It would have to be done in a lathe with a small boring bar.

That would allow the shot to spread out to fill the bore but then be choked back down to less than bore dia.

If I could draw it out I could explain it easier.

I was a tool and die maker in a former life, and I’ve done some work on shotgun choking and reloading for pattern improvement.

The experiment indicates the choke overcomes the rifling effect.
Taurus successfully uses this in the Circuit Judge carbine.

I’ve had the crimp type shells get stuck in a ruger 10-22 so I stick to the cci shotshells. They work well on rattlesnakes.

Please let me know if you experiment with the concept.

It does not appear that Routledge constricted the bore any, or used a jug choke.

It seems with the small shot sizes, they thought cylinder bore was best.

It appears if you bored and polished a .40 cal hole in a .22 barrel, for 12 inches from the muzzle back, you could have the best of both worlds.

Go to link and go to the part about ‘Constriction’, figure ‘G’ is a jug choke.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choke_(firearms)

What it does is let the shot spread out in the ‘jug’ and then be constricted back down to less than bore dia.

It wouldn’t effect a solid bullet at all, but shot would be choked down before it leaves the bore.

It isn’t that hard to do if you have a lathe. It would be a piece of cake to put a ‘full choke’ jug choke in a old 22cal rifle barrel.

12” of regular chamber/rifling, then ream out just the rifling. Then a jug choke of 1 1/2” one 1/2” or so before the bore.

I have thought of doing that.

It would be great if you would try it and report back.

The old guys were not fools. There may be a reason they kept the oversized Routledge bore not constricted.

I think the idea of being able to use the rifled barrel, and have good patterns with 12 inches of smoothbore later, is a great idea.

My thinking on it is that the rifling isn’t all that deep and wouldn’t be that hard to ream out, except the first 12” or so with the chamber.

The jug choke in the bore end would be easy, and if someone shot a solid bullet through it wouldn’t hurt anything because there wouldn’t be room to tumble or do damage to it.

You could polish the inside of the barrel and try it before you put the jug choke in it. Then machine the jug choke a little at a time until you get the pattern to want.

You can locate them on ammoseek.com. Pricey, but worth it since you don’t shoot a lot.

Even better, Remington teamed the Routledge bore with the Moskeeto small clay trap and created the "Routledge Girls" exhibition shooting team.

Nice outfits.

The jug choke concept was used in the Cutts for skeet shooting, and legend has it, the Soviets bought some Winchester Model 12’s with Cutts on them and produced the “Tula” choke.
