The nitty gritty is Soviet policy during the era made kulaks a class enemy. Anyone with tractors or cattle were suspects. So farmers and ranchers destroyed tractors and culled their herds. The production dwindled so fast, the Ukrainians were caught off guard.

The Soviets, due to poor economic policy, starved millions to death.

Stalin created the “Holodomor”, the deliberate starvation of ten million Ukrainians in order to subjugate them and establish absolute control. In addition, he exported the agricultural production in order to get hard currency.
This was consummate evil, the New York Times reporting to the contrary.
