Below is an extract from a CBS News article that is typical of what has been reported. It accurately quotes Trump stating that the #1 replacement for al-Baghdadi had been killed.
BUT HE DOESNt NAME THAT PERSON.
Later in the article you see that it was Al-Baghdadis SPOKESMAN who was killed. The Kurds have confirmed that and his name is correctly given in the article.
So far, so good.
What Trumps statement and the article fails to note is that al-Baghdadi had the man I believe was his real #1 replacement performing his duties while he was in hiding. That man is still alive, is the real #1 guy and is now running ISIS. And he took over immediately after al-Baghdadis death.
You can argue that the Spokesman is more important that the man actually running ISIS day to day if you like. That is certainly a fair criticism of my post. As is my failure to name this guy. Too late for me to track it down but his name will come out soon if I am right.
And I may turn out to be wrong. I dont think so. Time will Tell.
++ Extract of the CBS News article:
The likely successor to the now-dead Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is also dead, President Trump tweeted Tuesday morning. According to the president, the unidentified “number one replacement has been terminated by American troops.”
“Just confirmed that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s number one replacement has been terminated by American troops. Most likely would have taken the top spot - Now he is also Dead!” the president tweeted.
The White House did not immediately clarify which ISIS leader the president was referencing. But a State Department official confirmed Monday that a strike did kill ISIS spokesman Abu al-Hassan al-Muhajir in a strike on Sunday, CBS News Pentagon correspondent David Martin reports.
