After a section in which Johnson discusses radical, worldly movements – race, sexual, environment and health politics — that collectively present an alternative to God and traditional religion:

This, in a nutshell, is the basis for our need of the Gospel. We are deceived into believing that faith in God represents an archaic superstition and that abandoning this belief frees us to be wiser and more enlightened. In reality, God saves us from ourselves, or as Mr. Johnson points out humans descend into violently self destructive, yet clever animals.
History is replete with examples of men terrorizing men. Hitler, Pol Pot, Nero, and on and on.
This is the first I’ve heard of Johnson, but I’ll be looking up his works, on your recommendation, thanks.

Read his book Modern Times 1920 to 1980. Long but easy read. Really gives the reader a great perspective of world events and how they are interrelated.
I thought enlightened meant total awareness of one’s G-d consciousness.
But how can you tell a gay Englishman from a hetero Englishman?
