Putin pledges to 'do everything to protect Christians in the Middle East'

Russian President Vladimir Putin pledged to protect Christians threatened by the conflict in Syria, appealing to the plight of religious minorities as justification for Russia's involvement.

After a meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on Wednesday, Putin expressed sorrow over the persecution experienced by Christians in the Middle East, according to the Associated Press. Russian leaders have worked to develop close ties with Syria's Christian communities. Melkite Catholic Archbishop Jean-Clement Jeanbart has called Russia's intervention in the country a source of "hope for the country's Christians.

"The Middle East is the cradle of Christianity, and Christians are in peril there, facing persecution, being killed, raped, and robbed," said Putin. "Russia will do everything to protect Christians in the Middle East. We must help them restore and preserve their holy sites, preserve their congregations."

At a meeting later in the day, Putin expressed concern for the "massive exodus of Christians from the Middle East."

Obama cared only about Muslims who were killing Christians at the time.

“What was our policy under Obama?”

Or under McCain and Hillary as they worked to destroy Syria?

Putin is positioning himself to be the new Byzantine Emperor.

Not that I object.

The world has turned upside down. A former Godless Commie as the protector of oppressed and endangered Christians. Kanye becomes an evangelist.

Makes you wonder...

History will record that if not for Russia’s intervention against ISIS, there would be no Christians left in Syria and Iraq. Obama witnessed a genocidal slaughter and did nothing.

Back in the Seventies, Alexander Solzhenitsyn spoke at Harvard and stated that if Russia wanted to be a positive force in the world, it had to have an organizing principle. Marxist Leninism was a failure and destined for the ash heap of history, so that was out. As he saw it, the only choice was a return to the Russian Orthodox faith. He also doubted that democracy would work in Russia because it was not a part of Russian cultural or political history.

At the time of the speech, Nixon asked Kissinger what it meant.

"It is a very conservative statement," answered Henry.

"More conservative than Barry Goldwater?" asked Nixon, naming his lodestar for conservatism.

"More conservative than the czars," said Kissinger.

Putin was part of a Russian nationalist movement within the KGB that took Solzhenitsyn to heart. Since achieving power, he made Solzhenitsyn required reading for high school students. He took a Russian Orthodox seminary than had been turned into government buildings by Stalin and returned it to the church. He took a basilica that Stalin had turned into a public swimming pool and rebuilt it to its original specifications at government expense.

Putin understands that Russian Orthodoxy is the only hope for holding ethnic Russia together because if it doesn't, he will be presiding over a majority Muslim nation in the not too distant future.

Nice way to make the old bandit come up smelling like a rose. He’s well aware of the deeply mystical Russian culture. He’s no dummy.

I’ve always felt that Liberia should be turned into a homeland for African, Middle-Eastern, and Asian Christians.

It's not just Russian culture.

Eastern Orthodox Christianity went its own direction after the Great Schism of 1054. While Western Christianity had to cope with political and social upheaval, Eastern Christianity grew in a reasonably stable environment in Constantinople, and thus it had time to develop the mystical side of religion. All branches of Eastern Orthodoxy are heavily mystical.

Meanwhile the liberals in the west only care about Muslims. They LOVE that religion.

That is a very astute observation.

He sounds genuine in his commitment.

Syria was never anti-Christian, nor was Iraq under Saddam. Even Egypt was fairly tolerant.
