Ok young pup, educate me. After CBC,ABC,NBC which was the fourth network? CNN,MSNBC,TASS? I was a tad young to pay attention to politics in the late 60s, but those were the only three CHANNELS, let alone networks available to us via the antenna on our roof
nattering nabobs of negativism
Spiro Theodore Agnew (9 November 1918 17 September 1996) Thirty-ninth Vice President of the United States, under President Richard Nixon; born Spiro Anagnostopoulos
Some relevant quotes
Perhaps the place to start looking for a credibility gap is not in the offices of the Government in Washington but in the studios of the networks in New York!
From speech delivered Nov 13, 1969 in Des Moines, Iowa
A spirit of national masochism prevails, encouraged by an effete corps of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as intellectuals.
Denouncing Moratorium Day protest against Vietnam War; in NY “Times,” 20 Oct 69
In the United States today, we have more than our share of the nattering nabobs of negativism.
Speech in San Diego (11 September 1970).
Agnew’s signature quip against everything perceived to be liberal, particularly the media at that time.
This is the criminal left that belongs not in a dormitory, but in a penitentiary. The criminal left is not a problem to be solved by the Department of Philosophy or the Department of Englishit is a problem for the Department of Justice
. Black or white, the criminal left is interested in power. It is not interested in promoting the renewal and reforms that make democracy work; it is interested in promoting those collisions and conflict that tear democracy apart.
Speech at a Florida Republican dinner, Fort Lauderdale, Florida (April 28, 1970); reported in Collected Speeches of Spiro Agnew (1971), p. 135
Then he could have gotten hit with all the catastrophes of the 70s - inflation, recession, oil crunch, Iran, Afghanistan - instead of Carter. And it probably took time for Reagan to work out national policies that fit the times. Reagan in the Seventies hadn't yet put together the team and the ideas he'd make use of in the Eighties. Without Watergate, there would have been no Carter, but maybe a more competent Democrat who would have stuck around longer. Or maybe Reagan (or another Republican) would have won and gotten swamped by the messes of the Seventies.
Nixon really relished the division, though, and made use of it to get elected. Fifty years on, Nixon versus “the Establishment” is a lot murkier than it seemed at the time. How much was hype and how much was real? How much was avoidable and how much was unavoidable?
<>He should not have covered up for the burglars and their handlers and took a little heat for awhile.<>
Yeah, that was a mistake.
OTOH, the establishment that called for Nixon’s head over a burglary he had nothing do with, will defend the ring-leaders of a coup, Obama and Hillary.
PDJT and Wm Barr have the fortitude to turn the tables and prosecute the real criminals, Hillary and Bammy.
One thing that should be pointed out (you are mostly correct in your assessment)...that by the 2nd year of the Nixon administration...he was sauced-up and not really in control of himself from lunchtime of each day. Various people have talked about this alcohol problem (non-existent prior to the election), and important meetings needed to be scheduled in the early morning hours to get his best judgement.
I think if he’d stayed clear-headed and realized what these guys were up to....he would have fired them on the spot and cleaned up the mess himself.
Nixon did nothing wrong, punk *ss wussy “Republicans” let him get taken down for what wouldn’t have been a top ten scandal in the Clinton administration.
