Former Georgia cop sentenced to 12 years in prison for killing a naked, unarmed black man

A former Georgia police officer was sentenced to 12 years in prison Friday for the killing of a mentally ill, unarmed and naked black man in 2015.

DeKalb County Superior Court Judge LaTisha Dear Jackson gave Robert "Chip" Olsen a 20-year term, with 12 years to be served in custody. Under the sentence, Olsen is prohibited from working in law enforcement, possessing firearms or profiting from the case. Dear Jackson praised what she said was the strength, fortitude and compassion of the family of the victim, 26-year-old Afghanistan war veteran Anthony Hill. She said she had also watched the defendant closely during the trial. "Many might have thought you were stoic and void of emotion," the judge told Olsen. "From the time opening statements started, I saw the tears that you've had. I saw how you replayed March 9, 2015, in your head."

This seems crazy. The cop probably made a mistake and maybe should have been fired. Maybe the naked guy wasn't really charging him. However, you need to give police more leeway than that from criminal prosecutions. The deceased could have hurt the policeman or others. Making maybe the wrong decision shouldn't lead to long prison sentence.

“DeKalb County Superior Court Judge LaTisha Dear Jackson ...”

Hmmm. Makes you wonder if she could have possibly ruled any other way.

Anyone who watched the video in 2015 KNEW that the dead man WAS NOT A THREAT TO THE COP or anyone else. HE WAS NAKED AND SLOWLY RUNNING AWAY. Foot chase, take down and cuffing? Sure! A BULLET IN THE BACK? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

The article does not have any specifics on this case.

However, that being said, I must strongly disagree that police should be “given more leeway in criminal prosecutions.” Everyone is equal under the law. True, police have unique challenges and face life and death situations. That’s why care is taken to provide proper training and screening of candidates.

Yes, it actually should lead to a very long sentence.

police more leeway than that from criminal prosecutions

NO NO NO A THOUSAND TIMES NO!!!

The police should be held to a HIGHER STANDARD.

They are merely fellow citizens, but they are entrusted with the force needed to enforce the law. When they mess up, their punishment MUST be more severe, to prevent situations like this very one!

Attitudes like what was earlier expressed are the very reason the police have developed an “Us v Them” attitude. they have forgotten they ARE US!

Just stop enforcing the law in Black neighborhoods and Black homes.

Why take the risk if you are white cop?

If he shot some naked crazy white guy, the prosecution could never get a 12-0 verdict and send him to prison.

“” “” If he shot some naked crazy white guy, the prosecution could never get a 12-0 verdict and send him to prison.”” “”

I am not your average cop hater but still can’t find any good reason to justify shooting a naked guy, no matter how crazy.

Re: “I am not your average cop hater but still can’t find any good reason to justify shooting a naked guy, no matter how crazy.”

Well, you might want to start by reading the Defense case, which is NEVER published in articles like this.

Anyway, that was not my point.

If I was a white cop, I would never do anything but take witness statements and call for back up if a Black person was involved.

A naked mentally ill Black guy ran away from me?

My report: “I did not perceive him as a threat. I contacted Social Services. End of Watch.”

Really do you if armed feel you have the right to kill an unarmed man who does what...scares you or might be a threat maybe

The answer you don’t baring extenuating circumstances like you’re old or infirm and can’t defend yourself from a fight

Freepers love cops and love shooting folks
It never fails here I swear to God

And very few here have fought anything much at least not recently

People here also think if someone beats your ass in a fistfight it’s perfectly logical to kill the person

Even to the point.....he pushed me down somi shot him even though he was unarmed. And with his 9:year old

That guy was charged btw like I said he would be

Bottom line....lots of softies and scared folks here....no offense...love shootings from cops And cowards

Lurker like me is no sissy

Here’s one where the police would have been justified for sure

You charge cops with a sword

Well that’s your funeral you asked for it

I don’t think it was a justified shooting, but the cop should not be prosecuted for an error in judgement. A lot worse than that used to go on.

The jury acquitted him or murder and found him guilty of lesser charges, but LaTisha threw the book at him.

Killing an unarmed crazy man is not just an error in judgment

It’s the province of a coward

Latisha or not

(Wardaddy so well known on this forum as soft on the negro)

Good. He shot an unarmed man in the back. I’d have thrown the book at him, too.

I agree 100% with Wd and L. Anyone with public authority assumes a higher standard and must be judged in the same way.

Consider that the only tool government has over any other group, institution, incorporation or function, is lethal force. That must be held in check at all cost.

I was stunned to hear anyone on fr advocate for unequal protection. We already have a justice system that is no longer blind... what a historic reform.
