In 2018, Detroit had 25 times the national average of reported justifiable homicides. The police chief of Detroit, James Craig, supports the residents' right to self defense. He supports the issuance of concealed carry permits. From detroitnews.com:

The county's report shows there were 289 homicides in Detroit in 2018, although the county lists all homicides, whereas Detroit, like most cities, doesn't include justifiable homicides in its report because those aren't crimes.

Assistant Detroit Police Chief David LeValley said there were 18 justifiable homicides in the city last year. Including those in the city's count raises the number of homicides to 279 — 10 fewer than the county reported.

Detroit's population in 2018 was listed as 672,662. The number of murders in Detroit were listed as 261. This equates to a homicide rate of 38.8 per 100,000 population. It is the second highest city in the nation. However, the number of murders are considerably lower than they were in 2012, just before Chief Craig took over. The numbers of murders are the lowest in 50 years. The population of Detroit has dropped; thus the rate of murders is still high. The rate was 55.2 per 100,000 in 2012. In 2012, the interim police chief, Chester Logan, blamed the homicide rate on guns.

The rate of reported justifiable homicide in Detroit in 2018, was 2.68 per 100,000. About 6.5% of the homicides in Detroit are reported as justified.

Tucker Carlson noted, on his show, that many people in Detroit are exercising their Second Amendment right to bear arms.

Rick Ector, a Second Amendment activist and a firearms instructor, has worked for years to increase the number of women in Detroit who are legally armed.

There was a Fox report from two months ago....talking over a gun store there in Detroit which specialized in training women on weapons, and helping them get the permit to carry. Shop guy said this was catching on and surprising that a pro-female attitude by the shop was paying off.

Folks ought to take that commercialization idea and pro-female permit business to every urbanized area in the US.

i live on the west side of Detroit..in the last 10 years the turn around has been remarkable....gotta say it. The police chief has been stellar. Demolishing vacant homes was also huge...its like living in the country where im at now...deer everywhere..foxes etc. Community farms everywhere. Make no mistake...you still gotta keep your head up at all times..but its nothing like it was. Half the city had no lighting...huge piles of trash everywhere...packs of dogs running loose. Couldnt go to any store or gas station without crack dealers practically acosting you. They,ve really cleaned it up...

Thanks for the on-site report.

So, is Chief Craig popular? Might he have a political future?

hes extremely popular...hes in commercials here urging residents to legally arm themselves...its awesome...first thing he did when he got here was to restructure the narcotics unit of the DPD...3 years tops is all you can be in the unit...the old guard cried like babies but he said “you dont like it??..then quit”. He demoted the entire command staff and brought in outside people..he flat out said ..”After Kwame Kilpatrick..im not taking any chances”...he really shook it up....says he might be interested in public office down the line. Every body just wants him to stay where hes at!!...

That’s good to hear.

I recall an old youtube and the blogger is talking to this poor black man - he’s playing his guitar.

He has several dogs barking in the back while he’s talking about how poor he is. And I’m thinking “so get rid of some of your dogs!”

Then he starts talking about how he uses the dogs to hunt raccoons in the “wilds” of Detroit - and he sells the raccoon meat! Had to hand it to the old guy. It was an interesting story.

I’ve also read where the folks of Detroit got tired of the police not doing their jobs and created block watch patrols (armed) awhile ago. Sounds like the cops might be a bit more active now. Glad things might be getting better in the motor city.

"A Fist Full of Yen" doesn't quite have the same humorous effect anymore.

Detroit also had a lot more people 50 years ago. Detroit in 1960 was a showcase city of the American middle class.

But, I certainly wouldn’t want to imply that you don’t need to be armed there. My point is that the way things are going any relatively nice place can become the next Detroit.
