Scandinavian Wine? A Warming Climate Tempts Entrepreneurs
New York Times ^ | November 9, 2019 | Liz Alderman

SKAERSOGAARD, Denmark — On a mild autumn morning, Sven Moesgaard climbed a sunbathed hill and inspected an undulating expanse of neatly planted vines. A picking crew was harvesting tons of hardy Solaris grapes that he would soon turn into thousands of bottles of crisp white and sparkling Danish wine.

A decade ago, winemaking was regarded as a losing proposition in these notoriously cool climes. But as global temperatures rise, a fledgling wine industry is growing from once-unlikely fields across Scandinavia, as entrepreneurs seek to turn a warming climate to their advantage.

“We’re looking for the opportunities in climate change,” said Mr. Moesgaard, the founder of Skaersogaard Vin, cradling a cluster of golden grapes. “In the coming decades, we’ll be growing more wine in Scandinavia while countries that have traditionally dominated the industry produce less.”

Nordic vintners are betting that they can develop what were once mainly hobbyist ventures into thriving commercial operations. The dream is to transform Scandinavia into an essential global producer of white wines, which are beginning to flourish along Europe’s northern rim.

The growth has been rapid: Denmark now boasts 90 commercial vineyards, up from just two 15 years ago, and around 40 have sprung up in Sweden. Nearly a dozen vineyards are operating as far north as Norway.

But many are in the start-up stage and are tiny compared with established wineries in Europe, which has 10 million acres of vineyards — enough to cover almost all of Denmark. Producers in France, Italy and Spain own three-quarters of that land, dominating the European industry. By contrast, Denmark and Sweden have European Union approval to grow less than 1,000 acres of vineyards, and questions persist about quality and price.

...

In the last decade alone, warming has produced ... a small but rising number of award-winning wines.

I think the climate is gradually warming and that people will adapt to it, as described in this article.

Why the heck would Denmark and Sweden need "European Union approval to grow less than 1,000 acres of vineyards"?. Crap like that motivates Brexit.

Nice try, NYT. They tried science, but those of us with an actual education in science saw through that.

Now, they just assume it’s there by writing a nice story about something else.

Journalism. When everything else (except education degrees) are too hard, there’s always your local “Skool of Journalism”.

Nope, you haven’t been paying attention....Climate Change, global warming, and that whole thing are a deep state ploy to redistribute wealth....but you have to do that reasearch for yourself....but the media and many scientists were in on the scam....The dep State is much bigger and more powerful enough to have the news media in their control.

Study the Grand Solar Minimum....which will soon make global warming claims ludicrous. Its all about sun spots. Or The lack of them.

According to the thermometer it is not rising. According to the media and those who owns it it will. The same people who stand to get richer by climate scams.

So who are you going to trust the politicians or your lying eyes.

Yep. Grand Solar Minimum is a’coming.

Greenies, proggies and Millennials are gonna be praying for global warming then, when their homes are 55 F to afford heating, fresh food is scarce & expensive, and warm summers are just a fond memory.

There is a winery in my home town, Defuniak Springs.

It is called the Chautauqua winery after the old Chautauqua building in DeFuniak. It was the second Chautauqua in the world and the only one sponsored by the original one in New York.

I have heard that it is good but the only person I knew who tried it, said it was awful.

And what was “Vinland” known for 1000 years ago?

Vinland is not a name for Scandinavia. Vinland was the name given to part of North America by the Icelandic Norseman Leif Eiríksson. And while many think the name stems from the Norse word for wine, it could also mean pasture or meadow and was likely the area surrounding the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in what is now eastern Canada.

What will they say when the falling temperatures make it obvious that winters are colder and summers aren’t as hot?

We obviously are being cooled by lack of sunspots but it’s only temporary. We must reduce greenhouse gases NOW for when the sunspots come back, and they will, then the temperatures will rise exponentially and life on Earth will be threatened!.

Don’t be fooled by cooling temperatures. The time to act is now as 99 per cent of climate scientist agree, the average Democrat voter is stupid enough to believe any lie they are told by the deep state!

Best check the sunspot cycle, emotions point to global warming, facts point to a mini ice age. Where would you invest your money?

Goodness gracious, how many more times will we have to go over this? If it wasn’t for Global Warming, Scandinavia wouldn’t even exist. 12,000 years ago, Scandinavia was under a layer of ice a mile thick.

If these people buy land in Scandinavia for wineries they are fools. I grew up next to a ghost town in southeastern Montana that was homesteaded in the 1910s during a wet period. When the weather went back to normal the town went bust.
