Heading into the weekend we were anticipating a top ten that would deliver around $110 million, as it turns out the top ten currently falls just short of a combined $100 million as Lionsgate's Midway delivered a surprise #1 finish, topping WB's Doctor Sleep, which slipped to second and well below expectations.

At the top of the weekend box office is Lionsgate's Midway, finishing ahead of expectations with an estimated $17.5 million from 3,242 locations. The film also scored an "A" CinemaScore from opening day audiences and should expect a strong performance over Veteran's Day tomorrow that should push the film's four-day gross over $20 million.

That is correct. They bought the story.
I think they edited some of the stuff. Probably time related. They easily could have done a 3 hour movie with an intermission since the movie covered so much ground from Pearl to Midway. It was kind of weird how they included “Sole Survivor” George Guy in the movie but did not explain his situation either in the movie or the ending credits. Just minor quibbles, though. It was an awesome movie and I plan on going to see it again.

Saw the movie Midway yesterday. While the storyline is a bit disjointed and the acting so so, the movie accurately portrays the heroism of those who fought at Midway. The cinematography and CGI is amazing. Because many of the younger viewers may not know much of the history, the film starts with Pearl Harbor then quickly goes to the Doolittle raid and the battle of the Coral Sea giving little detail about what actually happened and it’s significance. The battle of Midway seemed compressed, again not giving some details. However, the movie is well worth seeing.

I expected a higher amount. I mean Downton abbey made 31 million opening weekend and it wasn’t even a holiday weekend.
The film gave the impression that the broadcast of, “Our water distillation has broken down..!” had not been a very deliberate US ruse, specifically in order to get the AF location info from the Japanese.
That wasn’t my impression. The film seems to hint that it was a ruse subtly.
I will definitely see it...
I get folks being passionate about the Charles Heston version from the early ‘70’s, but some of the stuff shown in the trailers has me intrigued. The CGI for the dive - bombing sequences looked particularly big-screen worthy...
I saw it with my wife. It was very good but not great.
The good parts were the history telling, though individually, “Tora, Tora, Tora” and the mid-70’s “Midway” were better at keeping track of the time lines of the critical events that led to the lucky victory. This movie tried to present this timeline but maybe not as successfully for someone not read on the battles. If you are historically knowledgeable then you would not miss anything, but for someone not familar with the battles, there was probably too much crammed into too short a movie in the actual Midway battle scenes. The sinking of Yorktown was basically about a 5 second comment in this movie.
The bad was the (seemingly) constant whining of naval aviators who lost their ‘mojo’ or academy grads who ‘weren’t sure they were ready for leadership’. I think the movie would have benefited from having its heroic aviator characters be down to earth, not so drama filled, but that’s par for Hollywood I guess.
Oh, and landing on a carrier with damaged aircraft is difficult enough without cowboy swooping down below deck level to pop up and basically stall on the ‘one’ wire.
The CGI was good, sometime real good, but like Transformer movies, at other times, overwhelming. They often crammed so much on screen that you couldn’t keep up with all that was happening in a given scene, and that wasn’t necessary since in real life, as an example, aircraft formations in bombing dives would not be as tight as they are just in formation flight. But that’s how they were pictured in the CGI. In real life there is just more open space between these things.
I really liked the end with the telling of what became of the actual participants, though I was disappointed that while the Ensign George Gay character was shown famously witnessing the Jap fleet defeat following being shot down, his name was not even mentioned.
Altho I would argue they *didn’t* attempt to make the Japanese completely sympathetic.
Japanese pilots were shown mowing down civilians in China and naval officers carried out cold-blooded executions of the two captured sailors via probably one of the worst ways to go - drowning
Yes at the end, I know, the dedication to American and Japanese sailors and pilots — but the actual depiction during the movie was that of a group of dedicated professional — and often brutal — Japanese military members

Part that has me honked off is that deep-down, we ALL know that the REAL pilot, Dick Best, rolled his eyes a whole lot, lisped unashamedly, flapped his arms around while mincing around the deck and STUCK HIS BUTT OUT..!

See my 29. I think we are both in agreement that the movie tries to cover a lot, but it happens so fast sometimes that if you didnt know the story already, you miss significant points.
Amen. It was a good movie. It’s for the reasons you mentioned that I check with movieguide.org to check the content before I go see it. Uninterested in seeing a homosexual/feminist propaganda/indoctrination film.

One other part that realllly had me rolling my eyes (other than the two ludicrious “pop-up” landings) was the part where US downed pilot takes cover in a school, only to see a Jap bomb fall and kill a Chinese civvy riiiight where he’d been standing a couple seconds prior.
As a student of both wars (pacific and european), the most interesting battle to me has always been midway. I’m really looking forward to this coming out on Netflix or Amazon Prime. Looks amazing.
going by memory, the Enterprise bombers jumped Kaga, the coincidentally arriving Yorktown bombers jumped Soryu,
then Richard Best observed the overkill on Kaga, broke off with two wingmen and jumped Akagi, and Best’s bomb landed among the parked bombers and their ordnance in the hangar.
Hiryu escaped until late afternoon because she was the furthest north of the 4 Japanese carriers.
Yes it was a feeding frenzy on Kaga, but thank God for Richard Best.

Yeah, I noticed that too right away. I think the director cut some stuff from the movie. Plus the movie focuses on on the Enterprise pilots. Gay was of course from the immortal Torpedo 8 based on the Hornet. They were covering a lot of ground and must have edited the story down.
That's the review I was looking for. The original Midway was cheesy and I didn't see a need to remake it.
When will they make a movie about the Battle of Leyte Gulf?
It was a bigger battle than Midway.
