Letter shows psychologist broke rules with Iowa sex predator
SFgate ^ | November 19, 2019 | Ryan Foley

A psychologist in charge of treating Iowa’s most dangerous sex offenders violated policies by developing an improperly close relationship with a violent predator who became obsessed with her...

Shannon Smith Sanders, who directed the treatment program at the Civil Commitment Unit for Sex Offenders in Cherokee, did special favors for the patient — sharing secrets with him, bending the rules for him and lying to protect him, according to a Sept. 16 termination letter obtained under Iowa’s open records law.

Sanders also failed to report that the patient was having personal feelings for her. The letter said Sanders’ actions constituted “boundary violations,” meaning they crossed the line into unethical behavior that potentially exploited the patient.

They also created potential security concerns for the institution, which houses about 120 sexually violent predators who have been ordered by the courts to be locked up for treatment following completion of their prison terms.

The letter did not identify the patient. But attorney Jason Dunn told the AP that it was his client, Jeffrey Goodwin, who has been locked up since committing a 1988 sexual assault in Keokuk. In custody, Goodwin has a record of expressing sexually violent fantasies and threats toward female guards and assaulting other patients and staff.

Dunn alleged that Sanders encouraged Goodwin, 55, to masturbate in front of her and that they watched pornography together at least once. He said Goodwin grabbed her buttocks a couple times and that they developed an “emotional affair” that included sexual discussions. He said his client frequently sent Sanders notes written in code.

*** Their relationship developed this year after Goodwin returned to the program following completion of a prison sentence at the Anamosa State Penitentiary.

He has been in and out of the treatment program for most of its 20-year existence.

All the folks in this facility should have been executed years ago or at least castrated. Then we would have to worry about him jacking in front of his shrink. And now he'll get a payout. What a warped system we have.

This reads like the script of some “B” Movie, starring Sharon Stone and Richard Gere. Straight to Video. A very unbelievable plot line. Nobody’s that trashy, right?

There have been a number of these sorts of incidents. The latest I know of was the Danamora case a few years ago. In Tennessee about twenty years ago really attractive (i.e., tall. blond, and stacked) attorney from a prominent law firm doing a pro bono case ran off with the thug/bad boy she was representing. They took off for Florida (of course). and when they were run down at a dog track she had totally assumed the cheap motel slut persona. It even appears she turned tricks to keep cash in the kitty. The woman had some big time male authority figure problems and it seemed she was doing this both for fun and to diss daddy who was a big fish in the Volunteer State legal pond.

There are a lot of women who really like Bad Boys.

That’s an unmentioned lure for teens joining gangs. You might not live too long, but you will get laid.

Sounds like the beginning of an ID Channel saga.

Woman prison worker falls in love with horrible monster, people die, most likely her husband, she ends up on the other side of the bars.

Happens all the time, no idea why they would be in a men’s prison or in anyway associated with male prisoners, especially of the sexual predator variety.

I'd say most, as well as a good number of psych majors.

Unfortunately, we you get crazies treating crazies, all you get is an overabundance of crazy. I think we're there now...

I did some contract work in a couple of prisons a few years ago. I was told that the number one reason female employees are fired from prisons is having relationships with inmates.

Many inmates are extremely manipulative and are very good at identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities. They are predators, and that’s what predators do. Any female employee in any capacity needs to understand that and protect herself.

Complacency is also an issue. I heard prison employees chatting with offenders about their personal lives. I never told anyone, including other employees, anything about myself. Where I live, my family, and other details of my persona life were all off-llimits. I’m very good at giving vague non-answers.

That’s definitely true. Most or all of those inmates are sharks.

But, I can tell your for a fact that it also works the other way around.

Women can also be extremely manipulative, and some of those women are guards and ex-cops.

I know one in particular, my friend’s wife unfortunately, who is just plain evil. I mean Evil and Corrupt, with capital letters on purpose.
