The mother of two New Mexico State Police officers was senselessly murdered this morning, said Ray Wilson, a State Police spokesman. Wilson said the agency is working closely with APD to catch those responsible for this heinous crime.
Gilbert Gallegos, an APD spokesman, had not identified the victim as of press time, but neighbors identified her as Jacqueline Jackie Vigil, a woman in her 50s.
Gallegos said that a little after 5 a.m., officers were called to the 2100 block of Corte de Loma NW, near Unser and Ladera, for a shooting. When they arrived at the cul-de-sac, they found a woman dead in her car, at least one of the windows shattered.
All indications are that she was in her car, getting ready to go to the gym apparently, and this appears to be a robbery attempt of some sort, Gallegos said. Two individuals were seen leaving the area in a brown Jeep Cherokee.
It sounds like just an innocent victim who was getting ready to go out in the morning. We dont know the circumstances if they were trying to rob her or the vehicle, but it does look like an attempted robbery, Gallegos said.
He said he couldnt elaborate on why detectives think it was a robbery attempt at this point in the investigation.
The shooting occurred in a well-manicured, upper-middle-class neighborhood on the citys West Side.
This was the 71st homicide in Albuquerque this year, surpassing last years total of 69 homicides. The highest number in recent history was in 2017, when there were 72.
Gallegos pointed to guns, drugs and gangs as a possible driver of the violence.
Its very frustrating, especially these type of homicides where we have little information to go on, Gallegos said.

Gibbs’ Rule #39: There is no such thing as a coincidence.
As I understand it, the Breaking Bad series wasn’t necessarily an inaccurate depiction of ABQ.
“Gallegos pointed to guns, drugs and gangs as a possible driver of the violence.”
Guns drive the violence? Oh really? New Mexico is not mentally well.
Sounds like the police were interfering with the Mexican Drug Cartel, an important part of the Mexican government.
In the very recent New Mexico those creeps would be auto-dead at arrest time. But now DOJ and dems took over. And NM has no death penalty.
It looks like a nice neighborhood just like Walt’s.
These f’ckin animals should be run thru a tree chipper!
5AM is not normal for a random robbery. Sounds like someone knew her schedule.
And NM has essentially eliminated bail (it hurts mostly the poor of course!) and lets criminals back on the street with just an assurance that they will appear for trial. Even those charged with a violent crime can go free if its a first offense and the judge "feels" they are not a threat to the community. Of course most of those set free commit more crimes and the cycle repeats until their continued violence against innocent citizens finally keeps them locked up.
Rotten ABQ City Government, even more rotten NM State Government and Governor. RIP.
I don’t read stories on media that demands reader to subscribe to read the article.
Reads like one of her sons might have arrested a cartel member for drug. Typical MO for these savages.
Agreed !
It sounds more like reprisal .
In the old days Albuquerque police would have nailed them. But at least right now there’s several state police officers with hearts of stone looking. Maybe God will smile down in the Mexican who did it won’t survive arrest
In Albuquerque, 5 a.m. is indeed a time you can be robbed, or shot dead in your driveway. There have been numerous incidents of people walking out to their car to go somewhere early like this woman, are hearing something outside and going to check and being shot dead. Just the fact that it happened in the driveway at 5 a.m. in Albuquerque does not mean it was a planned hit. It does not contraindicate it, but it does not indicated either
Gallegos pointed to guns, drugs and gangs as a possible driver of the violence...............
Democrats. Forget the other stuff.
