Economists once warned that office jobs in the United States would soon follow factory jobs in moving overseas. New research suggests that jobs may be moving to other parts of the country instead...
the broader jobs apocalypse never materialized...
Companies did move millions of office jobs to India, the Philippines and other places where they could pay workers less. But those job losses were more than balanced by growth elsewhere in the economy.
Over all, of the 26 occupations that Mr. Blinder identified as highly offshorable and for which Mr. Ozimek had data, 15 have added jobs over the past decade and 11 have cut them. Altogether, those occupations have eliminated fewer than 200,000 jobs over 10 years, hardly the millions that many feared. A second tier of jobs which Mr. Blinder labeled offshorable has actually added more than 1.5 million jobs.
The lesson is, change is evolutionary, not revolutionary, Ms. Lund said. Theres not mass movement of jobs anywhere. And because its a slow change, it gives people and companies a chance to adjust so we never saw the mass exodus of jobs to India.

US-based jobs can grow at the same time as offshored ones - the key is developing the skills needed onshore.
Here in the northeast they are just filling white-collar jobs with Asian imports; those jobs can’t move so easily because the Third World dumps don’t have the same reliability in their power grids, transportation infrastructure, etc..
Offices in the NYC and Philly metro areas, and all of NJ in between, are filling with Asians. The financial sector is facing the same “white-collar job apocalypse” that hit the tech sector.
But why?
Is it easier to get the skills they need by hiring immigrants?
Must be hard for the NYT to admit jobs are good.
Its a bunch of bull ships. Factory jobs go overseas because short term gains are obtained making stock prices go up but ultimately there is harm. We shipped an item by UPS and we made an error on the address. They called and left a message to call the 800 number and correct it. Whoever answered the phone in India was able to speak English but there was a lot of frustration trying to actually communicate. Ultimately we failed to get the correction made and the package was returned. Do I want to ship by UPS again?
Youve actually hit on one of the main reasons for this infiltration of foreigners in terms of both foreigners in other countries and foreign-born people in the U.S. into job functions that used to be deemed too important to let out of American hands. The mediocrity of the customers is really driving a lot of this.
A big factor here is that the whole region from Boston down to Washington has become a crowded, dysfunctional and decrepit yet expensive place to live ... and immigrants from Third World dumps are the only people on the planet who see that as an IMPROVEMENT in their circumstances.
But why?
Is it easier to get the skills they need by hiring immigrants?
"White collar jobs" means college degree.
Who would want to hire the well indoctrinated, high self esteem graduates of the USA "higher education" debacle?
#4 The company I am in IT, hired a guy from India in our east coast main office a few years ago. He in turn started firing many people and replaced them with more people from India. I did not realize how many until I had to contact people for a outage we had and the names were mostly indian.... My job one day may be taken over by “Bob” from Kansas and they will have a suspicious Indian accent.
No, they want to dispose of the middle-aged and older Americans who want things like lunch breaks, weekends, and vacations, who have bills that include mortgages and children.
I heard the same nonsense about tech (while skilled Americans were being laid-off - you know, after passing on their “obsolete” skills to their Asian replacements); there is no shortage of Americans with the skills for the financial sector (including basic accounting), but now there will be as young Americans realize companies want Asian coolies instead (just as happened in tech).
This death spiral of the American middle class will stop any births altogether; we already had a negative birthrate, this is the end of it.
Finance and accounting degrees were never considered useless, but they will be soon in an American’s hands - “No Americans need apply”.
If the economy was as good as some FReepers would tout, there wouldn’t even be a race in 2020; while things are better than before, for many people it hasn’t improved a whole lot.
Creating new jobs while not addressing immigration (illegal AND legal) isn’t helping much; if foreigners are getting those jobs anyway, what’s the point?
That is certainly a glass half empty approach. However, the unemployment rate is below 4% and the stock market reaches new highs everyday. Wages are up across all demographics as a rising tide lifts all ships.
Don’t be so pessimistic.
End H-1B now. We don’t need to import tech and white collar socialist scabs from the third world anymore. It needs to stop.
If offshoring of jobs and factories to Mexico is such a great thing why doesn't Ford advertise this? Why no ads extolling the fact "Now Made in Mexico"???
When I was in college one of my profs said you students won’t be working in factories like your parents. You’ll be information workers using computers. What he didn’t say is that the internet won’t care where you are sitting.
I work at a large US company, about 25k employees in 45 to 50 countries. I’m impressed with my international coworkers but hate to have seen most of AP and much of IT outsourced.
The problem is importing scab IT workers by the hundreds of thousands EVERY year with H-1B visaa from all over the world to undercut Americans.
