My host, who introduced us later, was probably seeking a dramatic response.

Florida's many crossings make it believable. Trying to outrun the train—by foot or by car—doesn't seem to fit a simple suicide or accidental-homicide explanation. 18-wheelers are often at fault. Sleeping on the tracks is another common "explanation".
