I’m sure the counter argument to this, would be that there were no official records of slave ancestry kept by anyone, so that there is no way to provide documentation of anything.
Depends on where the ancestors were and what records survived the Civil War.
Slaves were property, and like any other valuable property, records of sale and ownership were kept.
How else would you prove a runaway was yours?
