One month to go until recreational weed becomes legal in Illinois. Here’s what you need to know.
The Chicago Tribune ^ | November 29, 2019 | Robert McCoppin

When the most popular medical marijuana dispensary in Chicago begins selling recreational pot on New Year’s Day, it will operate like a busy restaurant. Dispensary 33 plans to take names from those in line and page customers by phone when they can get in.

The North Side cannabis shop will take that unusual step due to the huge crowds expected when weed sales become legal under state law at 6 a.m. Jan. 1, 2020. The celebration will be similar to the unofficial pot holiday of April 20, or 4/20, when a Dispensary 33 street fest and special deals this year drew 800 medical marijuana customers, marketing manager Abigail Watkins said. “It’ll be like 4/20 every day,” she said.

Statewide, that pent-up demand is expected to hit like rush-hour traffic — too much for the system to handle at once. With marijuana legalization in Illinois a month away, the clock is still ticking on a host of changes that need to be made to accommodate that momentous shift. Growers have expanded, dispensaries have remodeled and lawmakers have fine-tuned the law.

Weed activists and opponents alike are wondering if the state and industry will pull everything together in time for a smooth rollout. Potentially, all 55 existing medical dispensaries would be eligible to open retail stores on their current sites as well as at second sites. But regulators have licensed only 29 stores so far — to serve an estimated 1 million pot users — so officials expect long lines and sold-out products.

The tight supply means that weed is likely to be relatively expensive, industry trackers predict. Illinois already has some of the highest-priced medical cannabis in the country, averaging around $18 a gram and $300 an ounce, according to marijuanarates.com.

The pot push is disgusting on so many levels. It literally makes society dumb. Colorado is a prime example.

Have you ever heard of The River Key area of KC. They were blowing each other’s saloons up in the 70’s. I’ve rode horses through hemp patches 5 feet deep. My comic relief is I didn’t know what it was. Killing and burning it, I must have smoked a bunch. Pretty funny, a cold one, and a movie, and Wanda was all I cared about.

My bit of experience with "recreational" pot users (illegal here in VA) is that they get dumber. People who consume enough alcohol can get just as dumb, but at that point they have trouble standing. Pot use results in the same amount of dumbness without the physical effects.

Medical pot is pretty much a farce. It is semi-legal here in Virginia which means open season. In DC they give it to kids, and they bring it to school. Not allowed to share of course.

“Expect tp see a weed store ever 6 blocks, in every direction.”

I live in metro area of 300,000 in a state where recreational has been legal for six years. There are two pot shops.

So let's bring back alcohol prohibition. That was a sterling success, wasn't it?

Those fighting marijuana don’t understand how it is the same as the prohibition argument.

Those big shots on the Quay took each other out real good, didn’t they. And the feds rounded up quite a few more all over MO and KS.

Well all I can say is this was the first Thanksgiving where the young adults in the famiy all looked like they could do with a long nap! The food was either undercooked, burnt or cold and it took four of them figuring out how to make gravy that tasted so sweet you’d thought they were making candy!....I truly wondered if they weren’t high..

Soooo you’re comment made sense to me!

Next year get a turkey pizza, a bag of Cheetos, and 27 tacos. Have it delivered to them and have a turkey sandwich at home. I’m prejudiced, I’d rather have ham, beans, cornbread, and fried potatoes. Did I mention I’m a hick. Oh and send a small bottle of pop the the kids too. Heeheeheee.

Alcohol Prohibition was an unpopular law passed on an unwilling public. It made a criminal of 1 out of every 40 Americans. It never did anything it was supposed to do and it virtually created organized crime. It's repeal was the first legislative act FDR undertook because, for one thing making booze was a business and it generated tax revenue. Consider some thing else too: Drug dealers don't ask kids for id, do they? Do you understand this point?

Do you really think they are going to start that much sooner?

Robert Downey, Jr., was introduced to marijuana at the age of eight. Fortunately, it was his father, and not a pedophile.

The tight supply means that weed is likely to be relatively expensive,

meaning with their cheaper weed, the mexican cartels will be making money hand over fist from these fools.
