You also probably know your rural USPS delivery driver by name like I do in my town of 2700 people.

I think 15 years but the last 12 were consistent.

Well get ready New Yorkers, Andy’s going to release even more criminals (at least 900 of them) to walk your streets. They won’t have to pay bail either, but your tax money will be used to buy Mets tickets for them so they show up for their trials. How they intend to enforce that probably hasn’t been figured out yet, but in the meantime, look at all the additional crimes these folks can commit in between...most they’ll never get arrested for.

Smart Post: FedEx and USPS delivery program

Note that FedEx will be moving the SmartPost product to their internal ground network next year for last mile delivery instead of USPS.

"Not a single mention of the USPS."

My USPS delivery man is awesome. I live in a small apartment complex on the third floor, and he always brings my packages to my door, and if he has too much that can't fit in the small locked mailbox in the front hall, he'll knock on the door and hand it to me. We got to talking not long ago about how the Post Office bosses don't want them providing that type of service. They want them to just leave packages in the halls. He refuses to do it though. I asked him for his name, so I could tell the local Postmaster what a great postman he was. I wasn't going to rat him out about giving me special treatment. I just wanted to let his boss know that he was a very dependable carrier. In my conversation with the supervisor, he told me that the carrier I was talking about wasn't even my regular postman...that he was a sub. I was shocked when he told me this, and let him know that I've never even seen the regular guy, and wouldn't know him if I saw him. I've never given a gift card to any delivery person, but I'm definitely going to give one to my substitute postman this year. One time when I hadn't gone downstairs to pick up my mail for a few days, he came upstairs, and knocked on my door to make sure I was okay.

My oldest son lives in Troy, New York, in a three flat brownstone on a busy street down from Russell Sage College. He’s lived there over 20 years. The front door of the building is always locked, and all there is, is the front stoop at the top of the stairs. He had a small package stolen several years ago, and decided he’d get himself a UPS mailbox, and has all his packages shipped there. Then when he gets an email/text that a package has arrived, he stops on the way home to pick it up. I don’t know how much it costs him per year, but the UPS office is a lot easier to get to than the actual post office would be. I live in the small city of Rome, NY. Our local post office is always busy, with lines almost out the door. They only have 3 counters, and most times one is usually closed down. It always seems like it’s Christmas year round with the long lines. I’ve learned to go there between 2-3 p.m. when the lines tend to be shorter. And thankfully, I only have to go there once a week to mail packages.

Ditto here. When I order something online, although I pay the UPS rate, if it’s a smaller package, it get delivered by USPS.

I live in an apartment building

The building door is locked - when packages outside take them in and leave at apartment door

Very rarely do I have anything shipped to the pad.

There are some exceptions I’ve had to make with a few vendors. The problem isn’t them per se but Stamps.com.

For whatever reason, their software will not understand my UPS mailbox.

I was on the phone with one reseller as they manually typed and after enter, it would flip.

Wow, I haven’t had any issues and I live in the middle of a ‘hood area of Memphis. I guess being the “crazy white guy” of the neighborhood may have something to do with it!

If you are going to order packages through USPS, then it makes sense to get a bigger mailbox. I did many years ago and it eliminated 80% of the issues I had with packages through them.

Most of the people having issues, bitch when the postman leaves a card and they have to go to the post office to get their package, and then bitch when the package disappears if left at their door.

I once has a “sub” on my route for 5 years. Union rules protect a route for the “regular” guy forever.

The “regular guy” cam back after 5 years and the retired 3 month later and I got a new regular who then went away into the void for 3 years, leaving me with a new “sub”. After the regular came back, he retired in less than a year also and then I finally got a real regular guy.

I’ve lived in the same apartment complex for 20 years. The entry doors are not locked, and I’ve never had a package stolen. The mailbox provided by the landlord in the downstairs front hall work fine for me as my postman brings the packages to my door on the third floor. Even if another delivery company has dumped the package in the hallway downstairs, they’ve never been stolen. That’s the difference between living in a small city in central New York State, and the large metropolis of New York City. There’s more criminals per square mile there than there is here. I know because I worked in uniform for NYS Corrections for 25 years, and the majority of the criminals doing time were from the New York City area.

At least in our rural WV town, USPS will not accept delivery of UPS or FedEx packages to their P.O. Boxes.

I thought a P.O.Box was a great solution and was going to rent one, but if I can only get USPS packages, I then the rental cost is too high to justify.

When I first moved in here 20 years ago, the regular postman was a jerk. He was arrogant, and lazy. He’d park his vehicle near the dumpsters, then go visit some woman who lived in the building across the way. He always managed to time his day so his delivery here, which was probably the last stop on his route, wasn’t completed until it was just about time for him to go home. Thank God he left for another route, and we got somebody who actually cared about doing the job right. I can’t complain about my postal deliveries. Despite the long lines at the post office here, the clerks are great, and will bend over backwards to help you. Some of the biggest holdups are with people wanting to get passports. That always takes longer, and it slows up the line. We’ve only got 3 counters, and most times there’s only 2 working at a time throughout the day.

I have anything of value held for pickup. You just need to create an account to manage shipping. This can be done online. This is easy for FedEx and UPS, as long as the shipper sends you the tracking number. (More and more places do this automatically, and I arrange this personally with the shipper on important stuff.) USPS will do it as well, but USPS charges for the service.

In addition, at least in my experience, USPS packages being held for pickup go into some kind of limbo for a couple of days before being available for pickup. Not so with UPS and FedEx. Their computer systems are markedly better than USPS. They have been able for many years to tell you exactly where your package is. USPS is trying to catch up and may make it to the 1990's soon.

I live in the city with multiple pickup locations in easy range. Suburbanites might have to drive some distance, but heck, that's why they wanted to live in the suburbs to begin with.

I would never have anything more valuable than a casual sweater/sweatshirt or a book from Amazon left at the door. And I would avoid even that around the holidays, when the usual suspects are doing their own holiday shopping off people's front porches.
