Sure they can. Neither Sanders nor Warren is on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which likely will have the key role in actually conducting the Democrat side of the trial.

That’s not the way the Senate Impeachment Trial works. . . All 100 senators are the jury, and all 100 senators MUST be present for the entire presentation of the case. Constitutionally, it cannot be foisted off on a subset of them in a committee. All must remain present, and all must remain silent while the House managers, the prosecution, presents its case. Only then can the Senators debate the case.

Where in the Constitution does it say that all Senators must be present for the entire trial? If one Senator says “sorry, can’t make it”, does that mean it doesn’t happen?
