Arthur Waldron, like Michael Pillsbury, are two sinologists not in thrall to the Communists ruling the roost China. I don't always agree with his assessments, but his arguments are always thought-provoking.

Very good interview. What I found rather amusing though is through out the interview Dr. Waldron makes the point that time & time again people were mistaken about how China would not change as they perceived, in their delusions, that China would change. Then he ends it all saying he hopes China will change themselves. Almost as if he too has delusions himself. 8>)

C’mon now. Our eugenicists/puppets were trying to catch Islam’s, Russia’s and theirs.

...“si hu tong” (死胡同),”

It was a combination of Reagan and Chernobyl that sunk the old USSR... What are the uber large events that could topple China? And are we really ready for chaos on the level that could bring?

We are witnessing Tiananmen 2.0 but it won’t end like Tiananmen 1.0

I wouldn’t hold my breath. I would guess a collapse of that regime would begin with a military mutiny led by some warlord that wanted to be dictator. It wouldn’t last long before China entered a “time of troubles”, with all sorts of strongmen vying for power, with economic and social crises.

A few million Chinese would likely be slaughtered in the process, which is the typical fare for that trip. On the plus side, communism would hopefully be discarded as an inefficient waste.

Every one knows the Communist system doesn’t work, except Thomas Friedman.

Waldron has always seemed the sharpest Sinologist I’ve read.

Seems plausible. China has been dependent on a massive export market, which is not as available as it was.

The Chinese communist regime is heading towards disintegration and the West needs to be prepared to manage the fallout,

So what happens now?

Democratic erections?
