A crowd gives a standing ovation after members of the Chesapeake City Council voted to designate Chesapeake as a "Second Amendment constitutional city" on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019. (Kaitlin McKeown/Virginia Media)
A line of around 1,200 people led from the steps of Chesapeakes city hall, past the building and into a nearby parking lot. Bright orange Guns SAVE Lives stickers adorned the shirts of nearly every person standing in the line and three men stood in front of the building holding Gadsden flags printed with Dont Tread on Me.
Their efforts were rewarded when Chesapeake City Council members unanimously voted to designate the city as a Second Amendment Constitutional City a symbol of support for protecting gun rights. The vote occurred just before 10:30 p.m Tuesday.
Chesapeake is the first city in South Hampton Roads to take action on a resolution.
After the approval, the crowd in the chamber gave the council a standing ovation and cheered, clapped and whistled.
Mayor Rick West and Councilmen Robert Ike and Stephen Best were the only members who spoke before the vote and vowed to protect the citizens constitutional rights.
Gun rights supporters have approached more than 50 cities and counties in Virginia, asking local governments to pass resolutions stating that public funds will not be used to limit gun rights allowed by the Second Amendment.

If your state doesn't have a "state" 2nd Amendment organization, you might want to model one after the VCDL.
This is STILL the home of Patrick Henry!
Yes, and Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Lee and Jackson, as well as countless other unsung patriots living and dead.
God Bless them.
Wow! Good for them!
(I’m shocked that ANY Coastal town would have such good sense and courage.)
RED FLAG LAWS: INNOCENTS WILL DIE!

It is time to put all those privately owned ARs to good use. Create a local militia. Have parade drills. Range days. Buy ammo in bulk. Long range shooting events. Report publicly your progress. Design a patch to be worn everywhere.
Make sure all the local guardsmen are members. Have the sheriff as a deputy commander. And, if necessity, let the newbie state trooper know you know where he lives, where his children go to school, and his route to work. The veteran troopers already know you know.
You know what will happen? What any jackass gun grabber will do? Absolutely nothing, zilch, squat, nadda.
You either stand up for your rights or you lose them.
We need to start doing this in Upstate NY...
They have {or had},a good US Rep there too. I forget his name... ...
Where the heck were all these people in November? This idiot State voted in the dark forces and now just one month later they regret it? Sheesh, did you not learn anything when Obama told you that elections have consequences? We may never be able to get our State back.
That said, I’m very happy about the second amendment sanctuary movement.
“...This idiot State voted in the dark forces...”
I’d look more at the democrat targeted vote fraud efforts before paintbrushing everyone as “idiot”.
Not enough has been done to squash democrat fraud in elections, and “recounts” always seem to coincidentally favor the dems.
While all the gun rights efforts on the local level may be popular, it will be an easy matter for all these laws to be pre-empted by the Governor and General Assembly. Virginia will have to live under the state government they voted for in the last election. The democrats are in control at the state level and will pass whatever gun laws they wish.
Huge crowd in Norfolk as well. At this point it looks like the people republic of northern Virginia will be alone.
Resistance to tyrants is obedience to GOD.
They can pass whatever they wish, but they will be hard pressed to find anyone to enforce them.
Local sheriffs do most of the law enforcement in VA.
Gov. Blackface thinks he is going to use the State Police as his Gestapo and even a lot of them don’t want to do it.
My guess is that he would run out of state police long before a significant number of guns were collected.
