I'm reading elsewhere that students used to be warned to avoid this park and now they're not warned about it as doing so is considered perpetuating racism.

I lived in Manhattan until 1980.

All the schools used to identify “no go” zones explicitly during orientation. Of course, if you grew up there, you “just knew”.
