Even early so-called “progressives” hated the Constitution. They wanted something more French, where the responsibilities of the various branches of government were set out in broad terms but the means to achieve them were entirely left up to the political process.
The idea of a central government of only a few powers were suffered for it to have and all others not specifically enumerated reserved to those besides it was anathema to them.
No wonder modern “progressives” love FDR,for it wa his faithlessness and lawlessness that cast aside governance by constitutional means for them.
