American democracy’s Senate problem, explained A huge — and growing — source of bias in the political system.

Democrats have a Senate problem, and not just in the sense that Republicans currently hold the majority or that the prospect of that changing in 2020 is relatively slim. The problem is that the odds of ever changing it are slimmer than is generally realized.

Data for Progress, a progressive think tank and advocacy organization, is trying to raise alarm bells about the issue. In a new memo, co-founder Colin McAuliffe writes that “the Senate is an irredeemable institution” that’s biased 3 percentage points in the GOP’s favor and systematically underweights the interests of nonwhite Americans.

Of course, the fact that the Senate gives extra weight to the interests of people who live in low-population states is not news. That’s an undemocratic, inegalitarian principle that was deliberately baked into the Senate from its inception. What’s new is that changes in American life have made its disproportionality more consequential.

A key issue is race. As the US has gotten more diverse, that diversity has spread throughout the country unevenly. It’s not impossible for a state to be both small and diverse (Hawaii) or even small and heavily urbanized (Rhode Island), but lower-population states tend to be whiter, more rural, and less educated than average. The result is a system of “racism by proxy” that overweights the interests and opinions of white voters over those of black, Hispanic, and Asian voters.

Pfffftttttt. Vox. Amps yes, political commentary no. Oh, different vox. (Data for Progress, a progressive think tank and advocacy organization, is trying to raise alarm bells about the issue.) Weird how they see 'conservative racists' being somehow represented is an issue. The main reason there may be a "race issue" is because the progs keep trying to make it an issue. Too bad for them that a lot of "minority" folks are being "woke" and realizing they've been lied to by the dems since the civil war. Promises made, promises denied! Not enough yet, but soon.

US is not a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic.

Democracy if 5 wolves and 4 sheep voting what for dinner. It has failed everywhere it been tried.

If Democrats ever get a majority in both House and Senate, there pretty much goes democracy. They’ll overturn every vote they feel like overturning, claiming some law was broken that they can’t be too specific on.

Lucky for us, several of the democommie contestants KNOW how to do socialism the “correct” way this time around. :-)

and the problem is what, VOX??? Thank god for this or NY and California would dictate our lives. I don’t buy it either in that a good candidate who appeals to the voters can win regardless of party.

The “Solution” for the Dems on the Senate and electoral college is not to go off the rails or put of disgusting, fat liars as candidates.

Maybe some day we will judge people by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.

NOTHING will ever satisfy these race baiters.

If we gave $50 trillion reparations to blacks, then all the other groups in the colorful mosaic would line up for their $50 trillion.

There is nothing in the Constitution that prevents the Democrats from proposing policies that do not piss off the voters in the majority of states.

I'm not sure what point this idiotic article is trying to get across. Does anyone know which racial/ethnic group is MOST over-represented in the U.S. Senate? Native Americans.

States by indigenous/native American % of population (all states above 2%):

1. Alaska -- 13.77%
2. New Mexico -- 8.70%
3. South Dakota -- 8.31%
4. Oklahoma -- 7.10%
5. Montana -- 6.24%
6. North Dakota -- 5.19%
7. Arizona -- 3.92%
8. Wyoming -- 2.05%

There are SEVEN states in the U.S. where the population is so low that they have more U.S. Senators (2) than House members (1). Five of those seven are on this list.

Great...let’s put them in rural America and see how well they do running a farm, cattle ranch, pig lot, grow corn, etc.

Education ...Vox makes it sound like we’re all out here with one room schoolhouses!

How many of them would remotely know how to survive -30F in Montana and be able to keep their horses alive through it!

Yes...just slightly triggered...maybe they would know how to prevent wolves from taking your sheep, dogs, and kid.

Oh, I see...so I guess we can assume this leftist writer supported the elections of Tim Scott, Marco Rubio, and Ted Cruz to the Senate over having white Democrat men in those offices, right? And will be counting on and supporting John James to replace a white male in the Michigan Senate race this coming year, correct? (yes, that was sarcastic)

What a bunch of utter nonsense...and yet when written the writer probably thought it was brilliant.

It isn’t the composition of the Senate that has the Left enraged; its us white voters.

That’s whom Democrats really hate. Because we don’t agree with the coastal elites running our country.

Geez.
