New York is the rudest city in America, survey says.

We’re walkin’ here!

New Yorkers are the biggest jerks in America, according to a new survey of the rudest cities in the U.S.

The Business Insider study found a whopping 34.3 percent of respondents said Big Apple inhabitants were the least friendly.

That was nearly twice as much as the next highest city, Los Angeles, which 19.7 percent of the 2,000 adults surveyed online in October and November said was home to the surliest citizens in the country.

NYC is full of rude people who can still be very kind and generous. It’s kind of a paradox, but they will insult you and then help you out.

Lived in and around New York City (three of the five boroughs) and have been in 46 states and 27 countries. Rudest City by far is Miami.

My wife and I visited New York and New Jersey last year and were surprised people seemed more friendly than we’d expected.

When President John Adams visited the city in 1774, he wrote in his diary: “With all the opulence and splendor of this city, there is very little good breeding to be found.”

“I have not seen one real gentleman, one well-bred man, since I came to town,” he continued ...

“They talk very loud, very fast and altogether. If they ask you a question, before you can utter three words of your answer they will break out upon you again and talk away.”

The New Yorkers I've met tend to have a hard exterior, but a soft interior.

Washingtonians, on the other hand, are soft on the outside, but hard on the inside....sorta like strippers.

I returned to Boston to attend graduate school. Took the subway into the city and came above ground at Kenmore Square. Walking across the street to the BU Bookstore a guy crossing the other way looked me in the eye and said "Get a haircut you f**king faggot!"

Home again.

Yep years ago I had a vehicle broken into while parked on the streets of Manhattan. When I took it to the repair shop (also on Manhattan) I got lots of sympathy.

In my experience, it’s been Boston. When I was a kid I was on a public phone in Boston, talking to my parents. It wasn’t a long call. A guy who wanted to use the phone said ‘Get awf da phone now, aw owl rip out yaw hot’. Charming guy.

Also, you know where you stand. Lots of NYers, especially, don’t want the candy-coated, outward, “Bless your heart” manners with a shiv in the side.

Every so often when I speak to someone who is not originally from NY, and I am speaking in what I consider to be a perfectly normal pace, I inevitably get the “whoa, whoa, slow down there. Take it easy! Now, what were you saying? “

And then I definitely become rude. LOL!

If you think Miami is rude, try Tampa. Part of the reason is lack of law enforcement, the other is the population group in Hillsborough County largest by percentage is the 20-35 year olds. It dwarfs all other age groups. It’s like one big high school here, a population of spoiled idiotic brats with zero impulse control, most with English as a second language. Trash doesn’t get kept for disposal in a receptacle, it gets tossed out the car window while driving through somebody else’s neighborhood. Before any city is rated for rudeness, its demographics need to be considered. That’s 75% of what’s going on.

I worked in Midtown at Rock Ctr, and on Mad Ave, for the 70s & into the mid-80s, and saw behavior from one end of the spectrum to the other. I liked it for the first few years. Worst part was the 1-2hr Conrail/Amtrak commute in and out to NJ.

The New York rudeness stereotype predates modern politics by a long, long time. Get your head off politics for five minutes. You’ll be happier.

New Yorkers are in fifth gear. When I fly in to NY, I shift into fourth or fifth just as the pilot announces descent.

And for strangers/tourists just stay in a good section. fork Out the money for a decent hotel.
