Don’t bother with small talk. They will be helpful and courteous if you ask for directions however even if they just dropped the f bomb in a recent conversation.
I look at it this way, they are not rude to everyone....just me.
I have found that nearly anywhere you go, no matter where it is, there are rude people, and there are warm people, and much of what you get back often stems from what you put out.
And this is generally true world-wide as well with exceptions, often due to very wide cultural gaps. If you can make a personal connection with someone in some way, many times they can and do respond in kind. It is a wonderful thing. I love interacting with complete strangers and getting good results.
I laughed when I saw this thread, because I am from the Boston area, and from my Navy days, had an inbred dislike of New Yorkers due to some I had to work with. But I have found over the years that you simply have to find a way to approach people that brings out their best, and that includes New Yorkers.
But it is also true there are a-holes everywhere, too.
The all-or-nothing approach to people’s attitudes is simply a lazy approach to dealing with people, IMO.
You simply have to look them in the eye and tell them you wiped shit like him off your boots in Walpole before breakfast.
Then hit them with the phone.
Dorchester is fun when you know the rules.
I worked in New York years ago for a Wall Street firm, people for the most part were ok, but most of them were college grads from out of town. But when you get outside the office it’s different, mostly immigrants working public jobs and driving cabs, and some can be quite nasty, especially the delivery guys on bikes who will run you over in crosswalks.
I did have a good experience one morning about 14 years ago, while walking through Times Square on my way to work I sensed a gathering to my right, stopped and looked and there was Donald Trump giving a speech. Didn’t realize at the time I had a close-up look at a future President.
Canada doesn’t like Americans because Ontario is adjacent to New York
Good post!
LOL!
My Talley is 35 states 2 countries.
Yep! Boston is worse
I learned a lot in my profession from interacting with people who come from every state and every country from all over the world, and in many cases, put up an exterior or shell that is encoded and hardened by what they think people need or want to see (or what they themselves need or want others to see) and this shell can present as some of the rudest and most inconsiderate people I have encountered in my life.
But it taught me that if you can penetrate that shell, that person you thought was a rude SOB turns out to be personable and considerate person. Nothing like their shell. And I have also found that once you break that shell, relations are very different for both of you. And for the better.
But...as in everything...there are hard cases. Some people simply have a shell too thick to get through, and that won’t change for them.
Hahahahaha...that may indeed be true...:)
I am not saying New York is NOT the rudest city. Maybe it is.
I will say a mere “online survey” (which was based on two online polls) is about as scientific as a slice of cheese.
They keep moving out here to Pennsy, then ramble on about how great “the city” was.
Never realizing they are the very type of people they move here to get away from.
A lot of good ones move out here, but too many arrogant know-it-alls.
LOL.
Which consists of a lot of transplated NYers and NJers.
Excellent observation.
