A 33-year-old U.S. Army Green Beret has become the 20th American service member to be killed by hostile fire this year in Afghanistan. His death on Monday makes it the deadliest year for U.S. forces since the official end of combat operations was declared in 2014.

Sgt. 1st Class Michael James Goble died due to injuries resulting from an explosion on Dec. 22 in the Taliban-contested northern Afghan province of Kunduz. Two Pentagon officials tell NPR Goble's unit was seizing a Taliban weapons cache when he was fatally wounded.

It was Goble's third tour of duty in Afghanistan, and he died three weeks before what would have been his 34th birthday.

The Westwood, N.J., native is survived by his partner and their young daughter.

I’m an Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm Vet, and we are WAY past the ‘Use By’ Date to be in the ME for any reason.

ANY REASON! Bring our kids home! Nearly 30 friggin’ years of blood and treasure wasted is ENOUGH! We don’t NEED a single thing they have to offer. Nothing.

I hope President Trump is able to do something about this in his next term. :(

Not just the graveyard of empires.

Trapped in the 7th century and they like it that way.

Get out.

Why are we there? Can anyone give a good reason? Anyone?

“... his partner and their young daughter....”?

I HATE that.

Can’t they just say wife?

If he has a homosexual house mate say that.

Don’t use nebulous language to appease a hypersensitive minority.

We need to stop cowering before these perverts.

Strategic metals.

Afghanistan has the richest deposits of Rare Earth Metals in the world.

If we leave China will come in and take advantage of this find.

China will have no problem with totally subduing the native population to take control Afghanistan.

I have little doubt that China would simply start killing leaders until they found the right people to control the population.

Goble leaves behind his partner, Jen, and a daughter, Zoey, according to the website.

“He loved this country endlessly, and paid the ultimate sacrifice for it, fighting for our freedom,” Barker wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Times are going to be very hard over the next few months. Let’s do what we can to support this family and do right by Mike.”

I see the media is going to now report these deaths, after taking 8 years off

Around 1600 US military persons died in Afghanistan during the Obama regime, but nobody seemed to notice

It’s not a good reason, but part of it is that no president wants to be the one who “lost” Afghanistan. So each president hands off the problem to the next one.

Back in the 1960s LBJ was told that Vietnam was not winnable, and he should just pull our troops out. LBJ refused. And it wasn’t for strategic reasons. It was all about his ego. “I will not be the first US president to lose a war,” he said.

China already has leases for REM’s in Afghanistan. Their strategy, to build roads, water treatment plants, infrastructure projects seems to work better than the US strategy of comply or we will bomb the crap out of you, and sanction you until you’re sick, starving, or dead.

You make an interesting point. The US fashioned itself as the liberator of Afghanistan (and of Iraq as well). But if you’re a local, you probably don’t see soldiers conducting a raid your house as liberators.

If China comes in not with soldiers but with construction people, they might have a chance.

So what? Let the Chinks have it. So we're supposed to be there forever? I'm fed up with seeing our men and women dying and being physically maimed and psychologically scared fighting endless wars in Third World crapholes.

and as far as wars and the number of deaths go, Iraq ranks number 6 (with 2 per day) and Afghanistan (with 0.36 per day) is number 12. Both list of casualties are a extremely low percent of the population (0.001-0.002%).

The number of enemy casualties in the hundreds of thousands.

The media has always reported on deaths. It just seems that FR has cut back on the death reports and the vast national debt that keeps racking up. Obama would have been shouted to the moon under such a thread as this.

Afghanistan, and the ME in general will always be a vast hole to dump US money into and put to fire.

“It was Goble’s third tour of duty in Afghanistan, “

Terrible abuse of our troops. I wish Trump would put an end to this crap RIGHT NOW! In ww2 25 air missions you were home free. Now we keep sending these poor devils back over and over again until they get killed. Nice country.
