The above quote says it all. Brokaw knew from his “senior” FBI source that the government was fishing for leads to arrest Jewel. Brokaw didn’t care about Jewel. He cared only about bragging to his adoring fans about how connected he was to the FBI and how he could enlighten them about the progress of the investigation. Now that Jewel is dead, and Clint Eastwood rightly has portrayed the media as hyenas, Brokaw is sorry. Too little, too late.
So, does that mean we have to wait 22 years for the apology about the Russian election interference/Steele Dossier/FISA warrant lies?
The deep state was feeding Brokaw his lines no different than today.

No, in fact they have only gotten worse.

Tom didn’t have “sources” at the FBI, he worked for them reporting what they needed reported.
...and yes, Tom put err’d and put down a marker at 1996, but the FBI was founded July 26, 1908.
The FBI’s history of manipulating the news likely started sometime in the first half of the 20th century and progressed from there.
