AP reporting new airstrike north of Baghdad was not an American military attack

[If the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq had been remotely successful, we wouldn’t be seeing stories of all these senior Iranian military leaders roaming all over the place 10-15 years later. ]

It was successful in the following ways:

- The Iraqi army was swept aside
- Saddam was evicted and killed
- No Sunni Arab dictator has replaced Saddam as Iraq’s leader.
- Iraq has a democratic government and every government since the invasion has been popularly elected.

I agree that these senior Iranian leaders are roaming all over is a function of Bush’s spinelessness in not enforcing tougher rules of engagement. Soleimani should have died within days of his appearance in Iraq. But it’s really Obama who made the creeping Iranian takeover a fait accompli, by withdrawing the US troops who had acted as insurance against the eventuality of creeping Iranian influence. In this respect, the Democrats acted as the party of surrender yet again. That can’t be blamed on Dubya.

Weirdly enough, I think it’s Dubya’s imperiousness on open borders that soured the GOP base on the Iraq war. Given that the alternatives were Gore, Kerry or McCain, I don’t regret voting for Dubya. But it would have been nice if Trump had run and won in 2000. We might have skipped the Obama interlude. But I doubt the GOP base was ready then, for an inveterate skirt chaser who had slept with a porn star, let alone one who did it during his wife’s pregnancy.

PMU official statement denied the death of any of their leaders, saying that the convoy which was targeted belongs to PMU’s medical unit.

My spidey sense says that's bullshit.

Not nearly harsh enough, FRiend! I despise that POS. And if Nancy and company head for Baghdad, I hope they take her with them. I’m sure they ALL know they’re on their own. If I knew my tax $$$ were going to pay ransom for those vile miscreants, I would raise 9 kinds of hell. And I DO believe God would more than understand!

Amen to that.

I'm reminded of this story of the Emperor Carus's expedition into Persia, from Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire:

His ambassadors entered the camp about sunset, at the time when the troops were satisfying their hunger with a frugal repast. The Persians expressed their desire of being introduced to the presence of the Roman emperor. They were at length conducted to a soldier, who was seated on the grass. A piece of stale bacon and a few hard peas composed his supper. A coarse woollen garment of purple was the only circumstance that announced his dignity. The conference was conducted with the same disregard of courtly elegance. Carus, taking off a cap which he wore to conceal his baldness, assured the ambassadors, that, unless their master acknowledged the superiority of Rome, he would speedily render Persia as naked of trees as his own head was destitute of hair. ... The ministers of the Great King trembled and retired.
