Road Trip: Pine Bluff Arsenal, Arkansas

ARpinebluff

The Pine Bluff Arsenal (PBA) is a US Army installation located in Jefferson County, Arkansas, just northwest of the city of Pine Bluff. PBA is one of nine Army installations in the United States that stored chemical weapons.

PBA supplies specialized production, storage, maintenance and distribution of readiness products, and delivers technical services to the Armed Forces and Homeland Security. PBA also designs, manufactures and refurbishes smoke, riot control, and incendiary munitions, as well as chemical/biological defense operations items.

ARpinebluff5

It serves as a technology center for illuminating and infrared munitions and is also the only place in the Northern Hemisphere where white phosphorus munitions are filled. Its Homeland Security mission includes first-responder equipment training and surveillance of pre-positioned equipment.

Chemical Agent Identification Set (CAIS) Destruction: Another successful NSCMP mission at PBA included the Rapid Response System (RRS), a transportable treatment technology, which processed more than 5,300 CAIS items once stored at PBA.

The RRS began operations in August 2005, and completed processing in November 2006. For decades the arsenal stored chemical agent rockets (GB55's). During the 1980s, these were defueled and the warheads were destroyed. Mustard agent, VX, G and Sarin were stored in large bunkers on the premises.

Secret Delivery

Bible in a Year:

When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

Matthew 6:3

A clear, glass vase with bell-shaped lilies of the valley, pink tulips, and yellow daffodils greeted Kim at her front door. For seven months, an anonymous believer in Jesus sent Kim beautiful bouquets from a local flower shop. Each monthly gift arrived with a note filled with scriptural encouragement and signed: “Love, Jesus.”

Kim shared photos of these secret deliveries on Facebook. The flowers gave her opportunity to celebrate an individual’s kindness and to acknowledge the way God expressed His love to her through His people. As she trusted Him through her battle with a terminal disease, every colorful blossom and handwritten note affirmed God’s loving compassion for her.

The sender’s anonymity reflects the heart motive Jesus encourages His people to adopt when giving. He warns against practicing righteous acts “to be seen” by others (Matthew 6:1). Good deeds are intended to be expressions of worship overflowing from hearts grateful for all God’s done for us. Highlighting our own generosity with the hope or expectation of being honored can take the focus off the Giver of all good things—Jesus.

God knows when we give with good intentions (v. 4). He simply wants our generosity motivated by love as we give Him the glory, the honor, and the praise.

By: Xochitl Dixon

Reflect & Pray

How can you place the spotlight on Jesus by giving to someone in secret this week? How can you give God credit while still accepting appreciation?

Jesus, thank You for reminding us that giving to others is a privilege and a wonderful way to thank You for all You’ve given us.

I noticed a big hammer by the guys in the first picture with the rusty munitions. I do not think I want to be anywhere near those two guys.

I got to use my driveway for the first time since before Thanksgiving. Still an icy mess though. Soon I will be complaining that it is too hot. Happy winter to all!!

Hi Kathy!

Home now, I spent last week with my Sister and also looked up some old friends.

We played cards on 3 consecutive nights and all three won one night.

Did you make it up 'til midnight on New Year's Eve? I didn't 😀😀

Well, it finally stopped raining, but is cold and windy now. Not as cold as it is where you are, but still pretty cold!

Thanks, galz, for a great road trip. Used to visit friends in Pine Bluff but didn’t know about the military base except that it was there. Pretty area of AR.
