I watch a lot of old B&W TV shows. Some of them like “Dragnet” and “Perry Mason” etc. ate set in California.
It really looked like a nice place to live back then. What happened?
Liberals happened. Wait until their bad choices lead to cholera outbreaks.
I grew up in the north end of the Bay Area in the 60s and 70s. It was a great place back then, but once the liberal demons planted their claws into it, everything changed.
Highway Patrol showed a lot of open CA country.

Seriously! The old Western TV shows from late 50’s/early 60’s always have actors talk lovingly about “going to San Francisco”.

Mass immigration, legal as well as illegal. That drastically changed California from an American state and made it into a colony of the 3rd world. And it pushed California politics way to the left.
The result has been overcrowding. Very high real estate prices. High taxes. Programs giving health care, education, rent and food subsidies to poor legal immigrants and illegal aliens as well. Environmental regulations that have driven many companies to leave the state taking middle class jobs with them.
Laws that have decriminalized outright theft of anything under $950. Politicians and judges who have decriminalized vagrants and crazy people camping on the street. A massive homeless/vagrant population coming here from the rest of the country. That’s a just a start as to what’s happened here since the 1960s.
Aholes from throughout America flooded in during the 1960s, mainly from the east coast. San Francisco was solid Republican, solid line of Republican mayors during much of 20th century into mid-1960s. Most of California was conservative. Then Pelosi and other white trash migrated to California from the east coast and midwest. Been downhill ever since.

What happened to California is what happens to any area governed by left wing fruitcakes. I spent ten months on Treasure Island in ‘62 and ‘63 attending a Navy school. We called it the “Land of Fruits and Nuts” back then but it was nothing like it apparently is now. I have not been back so I only know what I read about the place but I would not return there for any sum of money.
