Lightning strikes as a column of ash surrounds the crater of Taal Volcano as it erupts on January 12, 2020.

Imagine the havoc this is going to play for the call centers for eBay, ATT, and the Credit Card companies....

Taal is one of the more amazing sites I have visited. Lots of cones in the caldera. Lots of homes in the caldera. There is an island in a lake that is in an island in a lake inside an island.

Where are you in relation to this?

Can you see the ash cloud from where you are?

I've done a lot of ocean diving in Puerto Galera, Mindoro, just a few miles over water from Batangas, Luzon. Some of the best diving spots in the world.

Between typhoons and volcanoes, the Philippines gets more than its fair share of natures destructive forces.

I was in Subic for the volcaphoonquake of ‘92 when Pinatubo erupted.

We washed ash off the deck with firehoses for nearly 3 days straight and then started transporting military and dependents down to Cebu for another 2 weeks or so.

Never forget watching (want to say it was) Iwo Jima (LHD) start listing because they didn’t start removing ash immediately. Then they started using the aircraft movers to bulldoze it as I recall.

The fear is that Taal could erupt with the same force as Pinatubo in 1991. Besides the local damage from all the ash fall, another Pinatubo-sized eruption could cause a decade-long planet-wide climate cooling. In short, California could end up with what happened in the 1990's--several years of above-normal rainfall.

Maybe they forgot to feed Taal.

The Flips did not dilly-dally about this, remembering the Mount Pinatubo eruption in 1991.

Well, I can’t resist...... things I should probably not have done.

Back in 1966, I lived in Manila and took the opportunity to get a student pilots license and take flying lessons. I flew solo in an old ,very old piper cub J-3. You could literally see daylight through the seams in the floor. but I digress. It was cheap. Very very cheap.

I flew on Saturday mornings. The flight was from Manila International out to Taal Volcano and back plus enough time as required to get an hour in. I regularly flew above and through the dissipating steam drifting up from the volcano.

On reflection that was about as dumb as the time my friend and I beat on a hollow tree to get the bear cubs to poke their heads out so we could get a photo
