Japan has confirmed its first case of a new coronavirus from China, the health ministry said Thursday.

A Chinese national who has traveled to Wuhan, eastern China, tested positive in Japan, the ministry said. The man in his 30s man lives in Kanagawa Prefecture. He returned from Wuhan on Jan. 6 and was hospitalized on Jan. 10. He has already recovered and was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday, the ministry said.

A ministry official said there are no other confirmed cases in Japan.

The pneumonia-like virus has infected dozens of people in Wuhan, with preliminary evidence suggesting the outbreak was associated with exposure at a seafood market.

dynachrome :" It sounded like a type of pneumonia that transmitted like colds do."

Quite true, since it is an airborne infection.
It is a viral disease, which dispersed by sneezing, or coughing(airborne particulates),
which can infect others without any physical contact with the infected person.
The only control to contain the issue is to practice good hygiene, wear a face mask,
and avoid touching eyes other mucous membranes, and frequent washing of hands.

The Japanese are famous for face masks. Hopefully this will help them contain it.

I was in Seol South Korea earlier today and now in Bangkok. People are wearing masks in public both places.

Even police, airport and immigration officials. I wore one for the first time during a 19 hr flight as people were coughing, sniffling and sneezing.

My reading many news articles comforted me. But I don’t believe the Chinese News Media . . .. even less than the US media.

“Many cold viruses are coronaviruses. “

So is SARS and MERS.

The worst symptom is the pneumonia.

I brought meds with just in case, but there are limited meds for viruses. I feel like a pin cushion I have had so many vaccinations.

I’m taking a daily malaria prophylactic as I’m traveling by water near the south China border. It’s soon New Year celebration here and many Chinese travel this holiday.

“The man passed the quarantine test at the airport upon his return because he had taken some medicine.”

Take some Benadryl and become a Typhoid Mary.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but this is an RNA virus that is easily adaptable.

Here is the latest CDC report.

Chinese authorities identified the new coronavirus, which has resulted in more than 40 confirmed human infections in China with two deaths reportedexternal icon. A number of countries are actively screening incoming travelers from Wuhan and there has been one exported case confirmed in Thailandexternal icon and another in Japanexternal icon.

Chinese health authorities posted the full genome of the so-called “2019 novel coronavirus” or “2019-nCoV” in GenBankexternal icon, the NIH genetic sequence database, and in the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAIDexternal icon) portal.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses, some causing illness in people and others that circulate among animals, including camels, cats and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can evolve and infect people and then spread between people such as has been seen with MERS and SARS.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/novel-coronavirus-2019.html

There is much more to learn about how the 2019-nCoV virus spreads, severity of associated illness, and other features of the virus. Investigations are ongoing in China, Thailand and Japan. Based on current information, however, the risk from 2019-nCoV to the American public is deemed to be low at this time. Nevertheless, CDC is taking proactive preparedness precautions.

Scary,.. huh ?
So much for border and customs examinations !
Communicable diseases don't recognize borders.

Maybe I spent too long, in the Medieval Hist subject at Uni, reading about the Black Death. But I am always worried that a new disease will appear and get out of control. I am especially suspicious of both China and Africa as places where such diseases can incubate, and food protocols are just not right.

Makes you realize how easy it would be for a biohazard immigrant to create a pandemic.

Ever read Richard Preston’s book “Hot Zone” about an Ebola outbreak in a Reston Virginia Ind7strial Park next to a Day Care Center? It went airborne.

Two of my children went into micro biology research relating to genetic engineering and cloning. My daughter did it in med school relating to malaria. There are over 400 different strains. She also worked with Babasia as they were losing too many transplant patients to it.

As a result, every book that comes out on infectious diseases, past, present or future, I get a copy to read and then pass it on to them.

The first FR thread which had the word "coronavirus" as a keyword in 2020.

What a long strange trip it has been.

New words and phrases over the last two years, cancel culture, social distancing, masking, flatten the curve, etc.
