I went to a UCLA seminar on triggering — and was triggered by a MAGA hat

I circle around UCLA’s Moore Hall for the third time. Security officers block each entrance. Police in riot gear patrol the streets. Metal fences wall off the building from protesters, and barricades separate protesters on the left from those on the right. Everyone prepares for Donald Trump Jr.’s arrival to promote his new book, “Triggered: How the Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us.”

As a trauma therapist who works with women and refugees — and who practices on Canada’s west coast — I admit that I live in a progressive bubble. I’ve never met a Trump supporter in the flesh and the psychiatrist in me is curious: What puzzle pieces of life experience could come together to produce a world-view so opposite to mine? I hope to chat with a Trump voter to try to understand.

But then I see my first MAGA hat.

My mind floods with images of climate activist Greta Thunberg crying “How dare you?” and white men marching in straight-pride parades, wielding swastikas, guns and Confederate flags. I envision immigrant children warehoused in cages and online comments that scream, “Go back to where you came from.”

I tense up and glare at the man in MAGA. I want him to feel unwelcome, unsafe and, mostly, to feel shame.

I’m at UCLA to attend a psychotherapy course to learn about these kind of moments — when big emotions short circuit our mind’s higher functions so we can’t think or behave skillfully. The professor playfully called it “boom time.” In other words, we’re triggered.

So a Canadian psycho-woman wants to make an American feel unwelcome. And cannot imagine how anyone thinks anything differently from her opinion. That’s really educated sounding.

Liberals are lying with scientific studies to smear conservatives as irrationally angry and afraid. That lets them oppress conservatives as crazy and irrational. It is a hateful stereotype based on bad science. And it is institutional bigotry, because a liberal group that proved this negative stereotype of conservatives wasn’t true had the paper rejected.

We Tried to Publish a Replication of a Science Paper in Science. The Journal Refused.
Our research suggests that the theory that conservatives and liberals respond differently to threats isn’t actually true.

That is aside from the massive politicization of the social sciences.

I wonder where she lives? Here will be my safe place, so long as this psychiatrist is at least 2000 miles away. We can thank the never ending fake dribble of the spoon feeding media for anti MAGA people. The media prints the hate and feeds it.

I was almost tempted to click on the link and read the whole article but then I remembered by New Year's Resolution. Does it get any better? And by that I mean, did she recognize that she needs to seek professional help?

No: she is the professional help who is here to tell you that being triggered is a problem that can be avoided by being understanding. Which presumes you actually interact with those you do not interact with due to being protected from being triggered.

For what the story is a testimony to is how isolated and brainwashed she is, likely in her university cocoon, being protected from being triggered so that, being programed by the likes of MSNBC, when she sees a MAGA hat, ,

My mind floods with images of climate activist Greta Thunberg crying “How dare you?” and white men marching in straight-pride parades, wielding swastikas, guns and Confederate flags. I envision immigrant children warehoused in cages

So the MAGA hat triggers in me a slideshow of sorrow and shock from today’s volatile and divisive world, and I’m no longer capable of being curious or compassionate for all the experiences that make this man who he is: a human (like me) desperately trying to belong and survive, who (like me) is socialized by complex forces outside of his awareness and control, and who (like me) may feel fear, grief, powerlessness or shame hiding under his armor of anger. I

Instead I slip into a false refuge of certainty. I know this guy — he’s a fascist, racist, misogynistic, homophobe.

The source of the problem isn’t rogue individuals being triggered, as Trump Jr. argues, but a vicious culture that is triggering. As we become more divided, the more we attack each other, the more we are left unable to truly see each other as complex human beings and have empathy for each other’s needs and struggles. - Joanna Cheek is a psychiatrist and clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of British Columbiahttps://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2020-01-16/maga-trump-jr-ucla-triggering ______________

Here in this lower-income densely populated city of mostly working pleasant amicable Central Americans they rehabbed an old factory building and turned it into condos. Which (in the name of diversity) they filled with what we used to call "Yuppies." Hardly a single child, but plenty of pets, and almost zero interaction with the neighborhood.

How much more isolated intellectual liberals like this lady likely are, as with Liz Warren it seems, and thus besides the brainwashed view of the Right, they come up with fantastical absurd welfare schemes that are imagined in the rarified air of the church of Starbucks.

From the linked article: "I tense up and glare at the man in MAGA. I want him to feel unwelcome, unsafe and, mostly, to feel shame."

Unwelcome? Yes.

Shame? Nope.

As for "unsafe", what comes to mind is the poster about gun owners with the caption, "We have almost a billion firearms and a trillion rounds of ammunition. If we were the problem, you would know it."
