Microsoft says it's going to take its commitment to being carbon neutral one step further.
In an announcement on Thursday, the tech giant says it will strive to be 'carbon negative,' meaning it will attempt to remove more CO2 from the atmosphere than it emits using a mixture of renewable energy and carbon-cleansing technology that pulls emitted fumes from the atmosphere.
When the company reaches zero, it then plans to remove all carbon it has emitted since it was founded in 1975.
While carbon capture technology exists, Microsoft has acknowledged that it's not quite efficient enough to sustainably remove CO2 from the environment.
To help improve that end, Microsoft said it will also invest another $1 billion throughout the next four years into advancing performance and lowering cost.
'The world’s climate experts agree that the world must take urgent action to bring down emissions. Ultimately, we must reach “net zero” emissions, meaning that humanity must remove as much carbon as it emits each year,' Microsoft wrote in an announcement.
'This will take aggressive approaches, new technology that doesn’t exist today, and innovative public policy. It is an ambitious – even audacious – goal, but science tells us that it’s a goal of fundamental importance to every person alive today and for every generation to follow.'
Microsoft, which has been carbon neutral since 2012, said it will also shift its resources to focus on renewable fuel and has targeted a goal of relying entirely on renewable energy by 2025.

What complete and utter BS. How about they cleanup all the carbon and truely toxic waste they are responsible for helping others generate? PCs, cell phones, electric generation, the increase in living standards, thanks to the computer revolution, that drives consumption upwards?
This is one the most cynical ploys I have ever seen in business. Almost make me repent of my free market beliefs. Maybe Elizabeth Warren should appoint the board members of large corporations.
Microsoft has 80K plus full time employees (blue badge) and 100K part time/contractors (yellow badge). I used to be one.
Each one exhales CO2. So they should either fire or kill their staff.
Microsoft doesn’t like trees or plants.
Meaningless virtue-signalling that will amount to nothing.
If MS were really concerned about its environmental impact it would close up shop today and burn all the money it has stashed away.
In other news, analysts have moved MicroSponge from “Strong Buy” to “Strong Sell”.
LOL! But it’s OK for Red China to keep belching out. It’s special...so doesn’t count.
What a con job.
You sure this isn’t from The Onion?
What are they going to do about their plastic computers?
Does that mean no more bran muffins in the snack room?
And no bean sandwiches for lunch.
Apparently, the curry-eaters that infest MS fart a lot.
If they remove all the CO2 all the plants will die and they will starve to death, but that is not so bad .... there is always Red Hat, Linux, etc.
Their Azure Data Centers are actually quite efficient, their legacy data centers in/around Redmond are not. Especially the one on the Redmond campus, at least last time I visited it.
When the big international bank I work for built our latest data center, we used plenty of technology to wring out efficiency in power usage, air conditioning, etc..
The coolest thing we did was the underground ice field that gets generated nightly when the power is dirt cheap, which is then used to provide cooling for our data center. The guy who designed that solution was damn' smart.
It is really about destroying the greatest system devised by man to raise the masses from abject poverty in the form of the US free enterprise, capitalist economic system and replacing it with a loser Marxist socialist system that has never succeeded at anytime in history, anywhere on the planet.
How otherwise intelligent people still fall for this liberal scam is beyond me.
Why stop there, surely we could erase all traces of Windows from planet earth.
Because you're looking at it through a microscope. You need to look at it through a wide angle lens.
Ridding the planet of CO2 is the scam. The ruse. The Left wants to hide the forest for the trees. They want you focused on the carbon emissions. When the real focus should be on the system change they want.
The real goal is to get rid of the free enterprise capitalist system, which is powered by fossil fuels. Eliminating carbon will destroy the fossil fuels industry and in turn, capitalism. And then replacing it with a Marxist, socialist system that has never been successful in the history of the world, anywhere on the planet.
IOW, it's not about stopping the emissions of CO2 per se. It's about the Left's wet dream of a Marxist revolution to convert the world to a socialist state.
Viewing climate change through a different set of lenses will tell you what the real story behind it is.
Thanks. Good analysis. Like most efforts by the prog and left, you have to take everything with a deep, multilayered view. There are marxist leaders at the apex who recognize how to use certain perspectives to their advantage. It spreads down from there to the naive and largely uneducated zealots (the “useful idiots”). Then you have the giant apparatus of university research where professors win grants to educate their PhD students. You have the scientifically and numerically illiterate press who uncritically and breathlessly regurgitates what the leftist / progressive professors find in their “studies” (this week - “OMG, all the chinstrap penguins are going to die!”). You have the gullible and poorly educated citizens who cannot think critically about anything except where to have lunch. The politicians co-opt the entire thing to amass power and control over your life.
We are up against a HUGE edifice created over the past 40 or 50 years. Like you, I see it truly as a “communist plot” to destroy capitalism AND all of Western Civilization. After the left finally concluded that the “proletariat revolution” wasn’t ever going to happen, they began their “long march through the institutions” in the 1960s and successfully captured schools, churches, government, entertainment...almost everything.
Gee easy for a software company isn’t it. Little harder for those that provide us the ENERGY to run the whole economy.
Im glad to hear that their employees will now start breathing in CO2 and start breathing out O2. Should be a requirement for the EPA also. Anything less is crass hypocrisy.
Exactly! CO2 is LIFE!
I once asked my very intelligent hubby what would happen if we took all the CO2 out of the atmosphere? He replied: "All the plants would die." I then asked what would happen next, he replied, "Then, we would die".
I keep waiting for this idiocy to end; but, there seems to be no end in sight.
