Navy to name aircraft carrier for Pearl Harbor hero Doris Miller
Honolulu Star-Ad ^ | Jan. 17 , 2020 | Will Cole

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Pearl Harbor Monday, the U.S. Navy is expected to announce that a new aircraft carrier will be named after Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris Miller, the first African American to receive the Navy Cross for valor for his actions on Dec. 7, 1941, when he manned a machine gun on the USS West Virginia to fire back at attacking Japanese planes.

“I think that Doris Miller is an American hero simply because of what he represents as a young man going beyond the call of what’s expected,” said Doreen Ravenscroft, president of Cultural Arts of Waco (Texas), and team leader for the Doris Miller Memorial.

In 1941, an African American was not allowed to man a gun in the Navy, and as far as rank was concerned, “he could not really get above a messman level,” Ravenscroft said. His actions started to turn the tide, she added.

“Without him really knowing, he actually was a part of the Civil Rights movement because he changed the thinking in the Navy,” Ravenscroft said.

“In the end, the fact that he didn’t think about what could be repercussions — that wasn’t a thought, when, at the time and in war, he did what was needed in his way to defend the United States of America,” she said.

I see plenty of carrier names that aren’t any of those;

Cripes. Only way to be worse would be to be burned/scarred and have a hump on the back.

Yeah, he was 6' 3", 200+ pounds, and the West Virginia's heavyweight boxing champion.

I'm that size, and it was uncommon when I was growing up. He was big 20 years before that.

I doubt Doris had much of a problem with any detractors...  winking face

Good. Better revolutionary war battles and ship names and heroes like this man than another damned politician.

And Dorry died on a carrier that was torpedoed off Makin island.

Fitting. And I wanna watch heads explode when Trump announces the first carrier I can think of named after a black man

We cut off their oil, so they attacked us.
Had we left them alone, they would have civilized China/Asia for us.
Talk about stupid.

I wonder if he got into any fights over his name?

“You better stop calling me Dorie - or else. The name’s Doris!!”

Outrageous! No doubt he killed and/or wounded some Japanese enemy in doing what he did. Is it right to name a ship after him, but prosecute individuals in the ME or today for killing terrorists. And I hope there are no photos of him with dead Japs! Oh lordy!/Sarcasm toward some Pentagon decision makers and paper shufflers!

The first Black American... to Hell with the divisive “African” bullshit.

If we’re to be distinguished, then all by the same classification: Black, White, Yellow... or African, Irish, Asian.

Congrats Doris Miller.

One of my maternal uncles was at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th, 1941. He was stationed to the U.S.S. Arizona on that fateful day. He had had shore leave on Saturday and had not returned to the ship by early Sunday morning. Some nice little wahine saved his life. This same gentleman stayed in battleships throughout the war, ending up in the 3rd Fleet and assigned to U.S.S. Missouri. He is one of those sailors shown lining the ship’s structures, watching the surrender being signed.
The greatest generation, indeed!

Naming an aircraft carrier for social justice. Sad. An enlisted mess man breaks a rule and gets on a machine gun during an attack. Certainly not up there with Founders, presidents, and such.

We cut off their oil because they were using our oil to invade conquer and rape destroy and massacre millions of Chinese citizens - among others. There was nothing civilized about the Japanese at that time - they were just as bad, if not worse, than the Nazis.

So apparently you were OK with that?

One difference between we Americans and many other cultures, including Germans is that in WWII if you kill a German lieutenant, in his platoon everyone is paralyzed, and don't know what to do.

You kill an American lieutenant, and someone else will stand up and take charge, sergeant, corporal, or even PFC. Americans are self-motivated.

It reminds me of Pat Buchanan's quote from his presidential campaign: "Don't wait for orders. Saddle up and ride to the sound of the guns!".
