As a crusty GenXer, who moved through the pubic school systems shortly before the (stupid and ill-advised) anti-bullying efforts that have only made things worse, over the years, I’ve come to the firm belief that the biggest disservice that is done to kids in this day and age is to try and pretend that physical violence and bullying can somehow be “squashed” via things like time-outs and stern talkings-to.
I honestly believe that all kids (boys especially), *NEED* to be trained to physically defend themselves from an early age. Even better would be a year or two of compulsory military service, like they do in many other countries.
ESPECIALLY when the Social Engineers have steadily morphed us into a society of soft, near-defensless pacifists, whilst our politicians have, all the while, been importing hardened, third-world warriors into our midst.

My offspring never shot anyone in school. Although having met the principal I could understand why someone might want to shoot that arrogant pompous ignorant liberal POS.

A lot of it is sensationalism. Talking about the first "school shootings" in the '90s I postulated this and a journalism professor told me a story: In the '70s, an unwritten rule went around the newsrooms - don't cover streaking "front page" style. Cover it if you have to but just the bare facts, back page, omit the name.

According to him it was obvious that the lack of coverage caused it to die out. I believe if we could get all news organizations to not sensationalize shootings they would be severely reduced. Furthermore, news entities know this. They just don't want to do it.

I would add they would be further reduced if in the small stories the murderer was called "deranged idiot" and so forth mass killings would be even further reduced. But I'll never get what I want. I just have to watch the killings happen knowing they can be severely reduced by simple common sense.

Because liberal parents teach their kids to hate and take action against those they hate.

Bible readings and prayer in the schools is a bad idea. As a Lutheran, I heard what I considered false teachings from the Methodist kids. Besides, most made a mockery out of the whole thing.

Everyone here complains about how bad they think the secular topics are handled at school, and then in the next breath want all-important religion taught by the same people. How sensible is that?

You guys really want school teachers to be spiritual teachers of your children?

————

They always have been. Teachers have always inflicted their values and their morals on our children. The issue is about their values and morals in the first place. This is why our American educational system has failed. And failed miserably.

I’ve come to accept the fact that as a straight, white, American male from the tail end of the Silent Gen, I am the sole cause of all the wrongs, chaos, injustice and misery that exists in the universe.

In admitting my responsibility and assuming this mantle I have found a new sense of freedom which allows me to say without remorse, “I no longer give a damn!”

Lets see,
1 parental irresponsibility,
2 broken homes, 1 aren’t no father figure,
3 mental health issues where the school system puts them in a normal school environment as therapy and where the patient/student can see for themselves that they really don’t fit.
4 no one is reporting threats made on students and faculty
5 teachers held hostage by the student as well as the administration
Liberals like to believe they have all the answers and are smarter than everyone else. The school systems are now babysitting services and metal health facilities

I think there’s a lot to what you are saying. I think advent of the 24 hour news cycle combined with the ubiquitous smart phones and social media has a huge part to play in the alienation component, lack of empathy, and the desire to become internet/news famous by any means.

Exactly. I can’t stand these stories that say that somehow we are all responsible for the crimes of others. There isn’t an epidemic of kids shooting at school.

They count shootings that happen near schools in gang related crimes as school shootings, but then the author of this piece says that 95% of school shooters are white males? I don’t think so. And 95% sounds like a big number until you think about the actual number of shootings in schools, and that is a tiny fraction of the crime in this country. This is just another bogus article trying to scare people, and probably a call for more gun laws or government interference in family life.

I read the article (imagine that) and pretty much all of the "telltale signs" of a school shooter are invariant to today vs yesterday. Personally, the "school prayer" argument is facile - God is of course important, but if the kids were from an atheistic family, school prayer wouldn't hold sway over the kiddies. Indeed, we've had the Mandatory Pledge forever but that's not formenting patriotism in the wokesters of today. Compulsory ANYTHING dispensed from the government is rarely efficacious.

What IS a sign of today is

Shooters tend to have experienced dysfunctional family situations or experience a lack of effective adult supervision, mentoring, or oversight.

Bingo. There it is. We have generations of selfish adults who think nothing of the impact on their children of their divorce. They think "well, Buffy and I are arguing so maybe if we divorce I'll be happier and I can trade up for that young thing at work. Oh and the kids....well...they'll be ok, right? They'll get two birthday parties and Christmases." Ironically, I suspect many of these divorcées probably bitched about prayer being taken out of the schools...

Of course the shooters are guilty. Blame the shooter. But if you want a root cause, look at selfish Boomer and GenX parents (who, btw, are of all sorts of political types) who think ripping apart a family is a fine price to pay for their selfish wants.

“ IMHO two reasons; they do not let boys be boys anymore, can’t fight over a girl or learn to lose a battle as well as win; guy beats the tar out of you, you learn from it. 2nd - video games, they can practice killing and killing and killing with no blood and no consequence.“

I wholeheartedly agree on your first point, but disagree on the second. As kids, we watched The Three Stooges, but knew you couldn’t really jab someone in the eyes with you fingers or hit them in the head with a hammer. A lack of discipline and lack of parental supervision is a strong factor. I never until recently heard of a teacher being attacked by a student. Sometimes kids need a knot jerked in them to get their attention. I was told from the start that if I got a spanking in school I was getting another when I got home. And I did. Absent stern discipline they become entitled little snots that grow into liberals.

My children aren’t shooting one another, and my children aren’t in school, except for the ones going to college. Best wishes to all y’all school people in solving your issue.

We homeschooled our children so I understand your sentiment however this is the culture in which we live.

Those potential school shooters who didn’t quite make it to that point, they will be working with your children, going to entertainment venues with your children and they join the armed forces with your children.
