A healthy, 36 year old mom of five young kids died a month ago from Influenza B

My daughter had it last week, recovered OK. Doctor told her it is one of 5 strains out there. Begs the question which one is the flu vaccine targeting? She had the flu shot in October.

I'm happy your daughter recovered. The CDC FAQ on the 2019-2020 Flu Season has excellent information:

Flu vaccines protect against the three or four viruses (depending on the vaccine) that research suggests will be most common. For 2019-2020, trivalent (three-component) vaccines are recommended to contain:

Quadrivalent (four-component) vaccines, which protect against a second lineage of B viruses, are recommended to contain: FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee (VRBPAC) chooses the flu vaccine viruses for the United States. For 2019-2020 vaccines, they selected the H1N1 and B components on March 6, 2019. Selection of the H3N2 component was delayed until March 22, 2019.

It’s important to remember though, that things can change very quickly with flu and we could still see circulation of flu viruses with significant antigenic drift this season.

There is frequently updated information at FLUVIEW: Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report

My stepdaughter is what they called a "unicorn" at the hospital. She tested positive for both the "A" and "B" strains, and was then diagnosed with pleurisy for good measure.

Fortunately, she's a nurse so they caught it comparatively early, and she's doing better. But that was scary for a bit.
