Guards have blocked routes out of China's Wuhan as part of efforts to seal the city and bottle up a new coronavirus as residents scrambled for supplies on Thursday, clearing out supermarket shelves and queuing up for petrol. The virus first appeared in the central city of 11 million people last month and is suspected to have jumped to people from an animal in a market where animals were sold illegally. It has gone on to kill 17 people and infected nearly 600, most in China but cases have been detected as far away as the United States.

I am over 50. This might be the first time in my life I have seen a government attempt to quarantine a city. This is something straight out of a movie. Be very interesting to see if the quarantine works so policy makers and like can learn.

“Similar measures are being enforced in Huanggang, which has a population of six million. Bus and train services are being suspended and entertainment venues including cinemas and internet cafes told to shut.”

Nice touch having the camera-man hacking up a lung near the end of the video.

Scary stuff. Sort of makes me glad it started in China, where the leaders don’t care and have the power to close off a city with 11 million people in it.

(NYC is around 8.5 million).

I imagine a city like NY would be simple, just close the bridges and tunnels. however a city like Chicago would be almost impossible without the military and a shoot on sight order.

Please note that the loose hospital masks do nothing to prevent one from inhaling the virus. They are good if one is already sick to help limit the amount you cough or sneeze onto someone else.

I’ve read where a N95 mask is effective. Although most viruses can last a couple of hours on your clothing - and 24 hours on a hard surface.

I have a co-worker originally from China. She told me the N95 masks have sold out there.

Thanks to the media's hype, N95 masks are the hottest items in Hong Kong.

HKD $680, 20/Box (USD $87)

I think started in China because of their lifestyle choices. Probably bats at the market that they took home and killed to make soup from...or maybe the live rats.
Sorry but their eating habits are cruel and disgusting.
I have not one iota of compassion for them.

it’s affecting 3 cities now: Zehou and Huanggang are in quarantine. Bejing cancelling new years celebration - others being told to, also. Don’t know what kind of ‘decontamination gas’ is being sprayed in streets in Wuhan, but that’s also being reported.

NKorea banning Chinese tourists (!) as is the British govt.

Vector is bats to snakes to humans? Are bats and snakes biting chickens or something?

It’s a fast mutator. Current mortality 1 in 1,000. The doctor who originally began work on identifying the pathogen is now sick but recovering.

Chinese are probably eating the snakes and/or bats.

real curious as to what ‘decontamination gas’ kills snakes? and does it work on rattlers?

Why is it that these really deadly diseases all start in Chine or the Congo?
I never hear about some pestilence starting in Japan or Belgium or France. It’s always Chine or the center of Africa.

Yes it was an exotic market of live wild animals. They ate it all, including rats.
