The law is not like so many people, who may be perfectly correct in everyday terms. The law is its own thing. It is deliberate. The law is slow. It is not hasty or urgent--unlike, say, anything Pencil-neck does. It is timeless, considered, and utterly logical. Its strength is that it is inexorable, just, terrifying, and final.

It is all that but you left off the laws most important quality, they are for sale.

Not the real law, which is the one people are afraid of. There are plenty of people who think they've bought the law, and then find out otherwise. I forget who said it: We cannot break the Law. We can only break ourselves upon the Law.

To the degree our practice of law follows the contours of the Law, it acquires the power I described. It is in no hurry, because it is eternal. It can seem to be dithering around for a time. But if it were hasty, emotional, and quick to respond to events--like us--it wouldn't be the law.
