The Naval Station Great Lakes has gone on lock down on Friday morning as authorities warn of a 'gate runner.'

The station, located in a North Chicago suburb, shared a short message on their Facebook telling people to 'hide' or 'fight.'

Commissioned officers should be armed always. Same as any LEO trained and trusted with a firearm.

I went to boot camp at San Diego and we had nonfunctional ‘03 rifles as drill pieces. I can understand not handing loaded rifles to recruits except at the firing range but gate guards should have real weapons.

I went in in ‘62 and the Navy did zero to train recruits for any kind of actual fighting then. We spent one day at the firing range and were given forty rounds for practice with an M-1 and forty rounds to qualify at 200 yards. I had never fired any rifle other than a .22 before but I did qualify along with four others out of a group of sixty men. Most of them left boot camp with no clue how to use a rifle, having seen Maggie’s drawers waved all day. One guy shot a better score than mine and he was a kid from New Jersey with lenses as thick as coke bottles on his glasses. He said his father had brought him up going to the NRA rifle range on weekends.
It would have been criminal to expect most of those guys to defend themselves with a firearm. I was barely capable but an expert compared to most of the others.

You don’t need to be armed all the time when you’re going about your daily business. Most of the recruits from the big cities have never been exposed to firearms and are uncomfortable with them.

I heard it first on WJR (Detroit talk radio). Googled it and that's where DM got involved. But I am a big fan of DailyMail because almost every other online news source will lead you to some important breaking news video which turns out to be 2 or 3 news readers spouting their opinions and insights in front of a stock video of a police car sitting on Main St.

Bases, stations and installation all have entry security, DOD and service specific LEOs, and agreements with local LE, why would anyone in general need a gun?

Hate the break the news, but our military in general has not ever had arms unsecured and in the possession of the troops with field and combat exceptions. Arms and live ammo? Only on a range or on patrol, with exceptions.

I recall guard duty as a recruit at Ft Dix in the late 68s being armed with actual real bullets and an M-14, 5 rounds I think. Don't recall any problems. A few years later, one of my buddies was cpl of the guard one night, when one of the recruits on guard duty tried to shoot a weather balloon over at McGuire AFB. That caused a stir. I cannot fathom any guard at any facility not being armed to the teeth with orders to shoot to stop any offensive intruder. What does the brass think they are running, some kind of encounter camp??

In the Navy an officer assigned Shore Patrol duty you, the petty officer and enlisted man assigned will be armed. At least that’s the way it was when I was in the Navy.
