The folks who pay, spit in the tube, and wait for their results, then use those results to expand their knowledge.
They both have had my DNA sequence for a long long time.
Genetic testing; here's everything anyone wants to know about everyone who is related to me in the present and the past.
I've just warped into a galaxy where everyone is stone stupid and proud of it!
You have it exactly backwards. 23&me charges for the DNA test, that's it. Ancestry charges for the DNA test and 19.99 a month (or more).
“New DNA matches pop up on my Ancestry as fast as I can process them....”
My experience as well.
If I were a serial killer Id be submitting my dna in the name of other people.
The site says in its privacy policy that people should give real names to register.
Now why would that be?
The genes are the genes, no? The name matters not...unless they also use it for “clues” to influence the results.
I am mildly interested in discovering my genetics but would only do so under an assumed name. If their testing is at all accurate it would be so whether my name was Bob Jones or Ish Kabibble. As it is a close family member has done a survey so I don’t have to.
Even though I keep hearing that privacy is dead..and I believe it, that doesn’t mean that you actively destroy more of yours.

I thought about getting tested, but then I decided what is the point of rehashing all those old questions about that Zodiac thing.
23 and me is being boycotted because it’s anti-conservative. They pulled their ads from Tucker Carlson. Boycotts work.
Because the police have been going into it to search for criminals? How long before they arrest an innocent person based on what they find?
Since there is no privacy in this, no wonder people don’t use it.
Why buy the database? Anything digital is hackable and thus can be breached, copied, altered or destroyed by outsiders whether they be some kid in a basement having fun, Big Brother, or some other entity.
There is no such thing as digital security.
I did it and refused to share the info with the company.
My lineage kind of ends after my grand parents and I was interested.
No surprises as but it was interesting.
when they feed you into federal databases, it is no wonder.
People getting accused of crimes because a second cousin used their service and they want to get your entire extended family DNA because it is similar to an open case.
Or the short squaty brownish woman with a round face and dark hair is so surprised she’s Hispanic. Or the thin high cheek boned black straight long hair with reddish skin is amazed she’s Native American. Wow, the black woman is from Africa. Who’da thunk? Their commercials are ridiculous.
Me, I don’t want my DNA out there for every low IQ minimum wage untrustworthy stranger to handle. That includes Big Brother. I did the family tree research the old fashioned way back through the centuries. Sure, there’s always the chance of mama’s baby but daddy’s maybe. But they are real people with real stories and not charts on a piece of paper.
All that money wasted only to die the next day by slipping in the shower.
Not anonymously. Bingo.
They already have most of that. Photo albums - social media. Parking tickets, report cards, yearbooks and draft card - those are already government owned. Baby books - the hospital sent the birth certificates, foot prints and DNA to the state health dept. Dental records - it was in the news just a couple days ago those are this close to being government property along with all your medical records.
Use a credit card, they got ya. Pump gas, they have your picture, your license plate and car model and your credit card. Drive to work, street cameras got'cha again. They know by how much electricity you use when you're doing the laundry and turning out the light at night. They know if you're avoiding using a credit card when you withdraw a larger than normal amount from your bank. They have your finger print off your drivers license and from evil Wells Fargo that requires a finger print to cash a $20 check on a WF account (oh, yeah, they did but I don't play that game). They know what prescriptions you pick up at CVS and if you bought a pressure cooker, nails and batteries at Home Depot. They know every keystroke on your computer and every call you make. About all they don't know about are granny's love letters unless you had them laying out within view of your screen. This also makes you wonder who all gets access to your mail in colon tests and food allergy tests. Of course, those will have the DNA of those who shied away from the family tree tests. Bet some people have had second thoughts on sending their hair to Locks of Love and donating blood.
