They have those in the US as well. I have seen a police car suddenly do a u turn on an undivided road and pull someone over who was simply driving in a lane of traffic. I assume the computer read the tag and flagged that there was a warrant for the driver.

Regarding my questioning how a policemen (in the U.K.) might know, on the basis of its appearance, whether a motor vehicle was insured or not - I explained that in a subsequent posting (#25 above).
Repeating: I am not a driver, and have no understanding of such matters as "plates," "registrations," "tags," etc. And I certainly don't know how things are done in the U.K.

I assume that you are referring to my (admittedly rhetorical / intentionally provocative) question about the govt. using facial recognition technology to identify citizens who don't have ObamaCare.
I am not "framing" anyone as paranoid about big govt. I know that it hasn't gotten that far - yet. But I do feel that it is a legitimate concern that big govt. might one day attempt doing such a thing, and by all means feel that we FReepers should remain vigilant.
