Maybe not in the last decade, but probably in the last 30 years.

Parts of the tree or cutoffs from the sawmill that used to go into the chipper now go to making other products.
Finger-Joint studs and dimension lumber is an example of that. Take a 2x4 2’ piece glue it together and make a 10’ piece.

OSB board was first introduced in the 1970’s. It has now almost eliminated plywood as an exterior sheathing product.

Engineered flooring(plywood flooring) was developed as a way to make wood flooring cheaper. Now it is used over radiant heated floors because it will not shrink as much.

Foam insulation has come down greatly in price from what it was 20 years ago. Installing foam eliminates the need for a vapor barrier.

Metal roofing has become a lot cheaper/square foot. Now it is real alternative from Asphalt shingles.

Most of these products were developed to make a better product or do the same thing but cheaper.

Look at how much the price of LED bulbs have dropped in the last 5 years. We went from using incandescent to CFL’s to LEDs in about a ten year period.

Basically Capitalism works.
