The last time Republicans held a majority on this state's Supreme Court was in the 1920s. Its Court of Appeals has never had a Republican majority.
The last time Republicans held a majority in both houses of the state Legislature at the same time was 1930. In the 89 years from 1931 to the present, Democrats have held a majority of both houses of the state Legislature for 79 of the 89 years.
Since 1931, Democrats have held the governor's office for 69 of the 89 years. Even when a Republican has been governor, his powers have been greatly limited because he has never held a majority in both houses of the state legislature while in office.
What state am I?
If you guessed CA, IL, NY, NJ, or MA, you're wrong. If you guessed NM, go to the head of the class (here) (here). Since 1931, no other state has had single-party Dem rule at the state level as long as New Mexico. And how has New Mexico fared under the stewardship of single party Democrat rule? As we shall see, not so well.
EDUCATION: By all accounts, New Mexico has one of the worst, if not the worst, K–12 public education system in the country. It is a system that spends vast sums of money but has little or no accountability for the students, teachers, administrators, parents, or elected officials. Here are the sobering stats. It has recently been rated as the worst state public school system in the country. Among the country's 11,850 school districts, only one from New Mexico, Los Alamos, is rated in the top 1,000. A charity named the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy estimates that an astonishing 46% of the adults in the state are functional illiterates.

In defense of NM's state government, this has nothing to do with public education ... and has everything to do with the largest Native American population per capita outside of Alaska.
>>>In defense of NM’s state government, this has nothing to do with public education ... and has everything to do with the largest Native American population per capita outside of Alaska<<<
Lieawatha should run for Governor there, she would win in a Landslide.
46% of New Mexicans are illiterate...and thats the why the Democrat Party has ruled that state since 1931.
Are you saying native Americans are stupid? Qualify your statement.
They consistently rank at or near the bottom of almost every measure of physical health and socio-economic success in the U.S.
” and has everything to do with the largest Native American population per capita outside of Alaska.”
A factor to be sure. We were spent a night in Gallup NM on our way to AZ and when you ate in a restaurant about every five minutes a NA will approach you with a tray with jewelry
to peddle it. Every table every meal it drove us crazy. Throw in the illegals and being run by rats for ninety years and you end up with a state like NM.
Every single minority group in this country should be aware of it.
Instead, the MSM incentivizes minorities unwillingness to BE American... assimilation at a level to AT LEAST complete school and support yourself. Keep your music, your food, your religion....etc. NO ONE is asking that you abandon those... NO ONE!!
Our people came here in the ‘20’s and couldn't assimilate fast enough.... THEY knew is was the key without which nothing could be accomplished.
They kept their culture and succeeded through assimilation. The faster and the more efficiently they could assimilate was the marker for how successful they could be, and they KNEW it! AND-they positively ADORED being American!!
The author's thesis has a lot of truth to it. It would be interesting to run the State stats on years of Democrat rule vs measures of health and prosperity. I don't think it would take a rocket statistician to find that Democrat rule means huge societal problems, underachievement, a large underclass, and poverty.
State | White | Black | Native |
---|---|---|---|
Alaska | 65% | 3% | 14% |
New Mexico | 75% | 2% | 10% |
South Dakota | 84% | 2% | 9% |
Oklahoma | 72% | 7% | 8% |
Montana | 89% | 0% | 6% |
North Dakota | 87% | 3% | 5% |
Arizona | 77% | 4% | 4% |
Wyoming | 91% | 1% | 2% |
Idaho | 90% | 1% | 1% |
Washington | 76% | 4% | 1% |
Nevada | 66% | 9% | 1% |
North Carolina | 69% | 21% | 1% |
Oregon | 84% | 2% | 1% |
Minnesota | 83% | 6% | 1% |
Utah | 86% | 1% | 1% |
Colorado | 84% | 4% | 1% |
Nebraska | 87% | 5% | 1% |
Wisconsin | 86% | 6% | 1% |
Kansas | 85% | 6% | 1% |
California | 60% | 6% | 1% |
Arkansas | 77% | 15% | 1% |
Maine | 94% | 1% | 1% |
Louisiana | 62% | 32% | 1% |
Alabama | 68% | 27% | 1% |
Michigan | 79% | 14% | 1% |
Rhode Island | 81% | 7% | 1% |
Qualify. Otherwise it’s just your opinion.
Reading the statement, there is no other interpretation.
The assertion is, it’s not the public schools, it’s the large American Indian population that is responsible for these terrible stats.
Now, the question is, is he correct? If so, why is it so?
“the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy estimates that an astonishing 46% of the adults in the state are functional illiterates”
How many of those functional illiterates did we import from Old Mexico?
One big difference in New Mexico is that you also have a lot of peasants of Mexican extraction (both legal and illegal) in the population mix.
Thank you,I'm just not up to "spoon feeding" him.
If I have the time I'll post statistics to support this, but nothing I've said here should be a mystery to anyone.
Here's just one example:
The U.S. Census declared that in 2014, 14.8% of the general population lived in poverty. This includes:
10.1% of all white non-Hispanic persons
12.0% of all Asian persons
23.6% of all Hispanic persons (of any race)
26.2% of all African American persons
28.3% of Native Americans / Alaska Natives
Source: "Income and Poverty in the United States" (2014), U.S. Census Bureau
20% of New Mexicans age 16 and older have literacy skills at level 1, the lowest level on a scale of 1 to 5.
Later in the article:
The national average for individuals at level 1 or below is 21%.
It doesn't seem so bad in that light. New Mexico is actually slightly better than the national average. Concerning the 46% figure from the article, the "NM Literacy Overview" (see the link in the article) says:
In terms of literacy level 2, 46% of New Mexicos population is at this level or below.
They don't give a national average for this figure, so we really can't tell how far out of step it is with the rest of the country.
My grandfather came from Norway in the early 1930s. He was walking home a few blocks from where we live, now when he was rounded up by the police along with a bunch of other suspicious looking characters. The Weyerhaeuser baby had been kidnapped. Because he still was not very good at speaking English they kept him locked up for two days before my grandmother was able to figure out what happened to him and get him released. It was not a pleasant experience for him, and he learned English very quickly after that.
I agree with your assessment.
Anyway, I was going to guess WV.
There is a restaurant in Gallup that has every condiment on every table, including iced tea and water. For a bit I thought it was for customer convenience, then I realized it was because of a lazy staff of waiters.
The truck stop East of the town center is the best place to eat. BUT, some of the Mexican restaurants in ALQ are exceptional. Los Cuates on E. Lomas is good if you like it spicy.
Interestingly, I believe West Virginia has the FEWEST Native Americans among its population compared to any other state in the U.S.!
