Brockton Stop & Shop announces closure (MA)

Another supermarket in Brockton is closing down, leaving a vacant plaza on Belmont Street, one of the main corridors into the city.

Citing flagging financial returns, Stop & Shop said it plans to close its store at 683 Belmont St. on the West Side of Brockton after 25 years in business. It is scheduled to close on March 28, the company said.

“Stop & Shop has made the difficult decision not to renew the lease for our store on 683 Belmont Street in Brockton, Massachusetts, as the store was not meeting financial expectations,” according to a statement from the company released on Tuesday.

...

Stop & Shop said it will continue to operate its other Brockton store at 932 North Montello St., less than four miles away.

The Belmont Street store, which first opened in June 1995, employs about 100 workers, said Tim Melia, president of UFCW Local 328, the union that represents them. Melia said he was informed of the store closing on Tuesday morning. Melia said it’s unclear what Stop & Shop has in mind for the future of those employees – whether they will be offered a job elsewhere or not.

“I asked them what they intend to do. They told me they have not decided yet,” Melia said.

Melia said the employees will likely either be offered jobs at other Stop & Shop locations, or they will be “bumped,” which potentially could mean layoffs.

I wonder if the strike last April, where you were proud your "brothers and sisters" told potential customers to go away for a few weeks had any impact Mr. Melia? Hmmm.

Market Basket is really putting the squeeze on the other grocery chains in New England. Better fresh produce, better bakery items, better selection of other groceries, and nicer stores (mostly). I’m not surprised that Stop and Shop is feeling the heat.

I live within a 5 minute drive of three supermarkets...Stop & Shop,Roche Brothers (a small suburban Boston chain...quite nice) and a recently opened Wegman's.

Wegman's gets my vote every time.Although it was once my regular market I now stop at Roche Brothers only occasionally to pick up one or two things...and I won't even consider Stop & Shop.

Being it’s Brockton, I’d say that they probably had higher than average cases of shoplifting at the store.

Around here stores are closing in the higher crime neighborhoods, then we hear the community “leaders” and media bleat about how it’s “unfair” to the community, blah, blah, blah.

Us too. Few weeks ago we ran into Artie T at the Waltham store. Yes, the head honcho. He greeted us with a “Merry Christmas”. Says it all really.

Brockton has been a (expletive deleted - think of Baltimore) for a very long time. No one in their right mind would travel *into* the city to shop when there are much better supermarkets *outside* of the city. The comment that the locals are giving themselves five finger discounts rings very true.

I used to work there. One morning I pulled up to my usual breakfast joint and the liquor store next door was covered in police tape. I asked the waitress what was up and she said - in a cold nonchalance that was really spooky - that the owner was gunned down in a robbery a few hours earlier.

I realized it was time to go!

Plus Market Basket (a local MA chain) and Shaw's (now owned by Albertson's) are kicking Stop & Shop on prices every day of the week.

I only go to Shaw's when I need something immediately...since it is a mile away from me. And Stop & Pee? Never. Too danged expensive.

Employee theft scams would also be a major factor in a h(*&hole like Brockton.

The city is so awful—it has to be experienced to be believed.

Stop & Pee? Sounds like you've heard the joke too. It goes back many decades.

you don’t get the quarters back when the cart is returned anymore? It has been many many years since I have lived near an Aldi’s.

You don’t rent the shopping cart at Aldo. You push a quarter into a slot that releases your cart from a string of chained carts. When you return your cart to the line of carts, your own quarter pops out. It’s the most effective way to get people to return their carts to the store. There are no carts left in the parking lot, ready to roll into a car. I think that Aldi is terrific.

Yup. They’ve all gone. My family’s last bastion was Plymouth. They’re gone now.

I have friends that still live in Wareham and Taunton. They’re hanging in there.

Oh, and I’m sure you know that Brockton used to be known as “Shoe City”. Had a shoe factory right across the street from my house on Market St. It’s still there but I have no idea what they make (if anything) now.

My only real dealing with anyone from Brockton was when we played the Div 1 championship game against them in ‘88.... They played dirty
