A Long Island judge intentionally ignored the state’s controversial bail-reform law and refused to release a “menace to society” accused of robbing two banks while awaiting sentencing in federal court, The Post has learned.
But the principled stand taken by Nassau County District Court Judge David McAndrews was short-lived, as a higher-level judge promptly reversed his order and released Romell Nellis with an ankle monitor — only to have him cut it off and disappear.
Nellis, 40, was busted Jan. 8 in a pair of bank heists in which he allegedly gave tellers notes that threatened, “I have a gun!” and demanded “$100s, 50s & 20s.”
The homeless ex-con made off with a total haul of nearly $9,500 from the capers in West Hempstead and Valley Stream, which took place on Dec. 17 and 30, respectively, court papers allege.
At the time of the robberies, Nellis was facing sentencing in Central Islip federal court after admitting that he violated his supervised release in a crack-trafficking case from 2012, for which he served a seven-year prison term.
He was initially scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 16, but his court-appointed lawyer got the proceeding postponed until March 24 because Nellis was “scheduled to enter into an in-patient drug treatment program,” court records show.

Maybe next election, the lazy, apathetic, “Let someone else do it” voters will actually get off their fat rear ends and actually research candidates and issues, then go to cast a vote. That’s the only way to get rid of the clown-a@@ morons in the State Assembly who wrote and passed this suicidal law. How many more people must be assaulted, robbed, murdered or killed in the name of “equality” and making a form of “reparations” to the po’ black folk who can’t afford bail? If they “can’t afford bail”, then don’t do the crime. Why should the citizens of NY be available as prey for these animals to victimize over and over again?
Everyone in the county should know who this higher judge is. Post pictures with his name.

I’m pushing 60 myself, and have lived in Central and Western NY all my life.
It’s disgusting what has become of our state.
There are good people, and real conservatives in our neck of the woods. But we are swamped by the Elephant in the room. I live in Williamsville, where are you from?
Until these policies start affecting the politicos and their families, it will continue. Of course if the citizens stormed the government facilities and refused to leave until the jerks responsible for these inane policies resigned, that would also work.

Same here in NJ; I’m a bit younger, but NJ bears no resemblance to the state of my youth. In both cases, the rot is plain to see.
And he is a Republican.
