Uproar Over Essays Turns MLK’s Dream Inside Out. The University of Montana judged contest submissions on content instead of the writers’ race. Big mistake.

The University of Montana asked students, staff and community members to participate in an essay contest on the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. When the school released the results last month, Montana students and race activists across the country accused university officials of racism and disrespect. That’s because all four winners were white. Turns out some would rather the school had honored King by judging entrants on the color of their skin rather than the content of their submissions.

The four contest winners started receiving threats, and the African-American studies program, which had sponsored the contest, removed their photos and essays from its website. A central fact—no black students had even submitted an essay—failed to defuse the racism charge.

Critics blasted “shameful” university officials for holding a contest at all. A lecturer on the college race circuit admonished the university for thinking that “there is a universality around writing an essay,” when in reality blacks express themselves “completely different.” One black student sniffed that participating would have been a “sellout/compromise.” “Having grown up in all white spaces,” he posted on Facebook, “I often avoided events such as this because I knew the purpose was a performative gesture from the administration.” How the student determines when events are not “performative gestures” was left unspecified.

The African-American studies program was denounced for not canceling the competition when the organizers realized the skin color of the six entrants. “I cannot understand how anyone would think remembering the legacy of MLK Jr. is achieved by giving four white girls a shout out,” wrote a critic. “Do not center Whiteness on the day we are supposed to remember MLK Jr.’s legacy.”

But the contest rules had no racial prerequisites.

If no black students could be bothered to submit an entry, whose fault is that? Removing the essays from the web site because of the race of the winners is clearly racist. I am reminded of the tech conference that was cancelled because none of the speakers were women.

Once again I have to double check. Is this from the Babylon Bee?

These race pimps can’t be serious. No blacks enter the contest yet they are triggered when a white person wins.

Life is satire.

Blacks have an exclusive monopoly on African Studies programs. Whites are not welcome.

The violation of the rule led to the uproar.

No blacks enter the contest yet they are triggered when a white person wins.

Hence the basis for perpetual rage.

MLK Jr. is spinning in his grave at the Leftists SJW culture. It is the complete and total rejection of everything the man spoke of and stood for.
But, the true facts are, before his body had cooled, the race hustlers like Jesse Jackson had raced in at lightspeed to usurp his goals and ideals and replace them with their own selfish and self aggandizing agenda’s.
All the while using Reverend Kings words and ideals as both a shield and a cloak to protect and hide their personal agenda’s which had nothing at all to do with the ideas and idels espoused by Rev. King.
And, everything to do with self enrichment via white guilt and corporate shakedowns.

This is a logical extension of what has gone before the last 40 years.

We should be appalled, afraid, disgusted. But not surprised.

Small minds think small thoughts. I could quite easily ensure our organization’s college scholarships excluded certain people based on race - but that would make me no better than their uneducated, illogical, bitter, jealous, soulless selves.

Obviously, the school hasn’t recruited enough black students who can write.

You can’t give a participation trophy to someone who won’t participate.

Re the “critics”. I wish Heather MacDonald and other writers would identify these people, not just as “lecturer” (need name and school) or a “black student” who has a Facebook site.

Let us know who the enemy is. Otherwise, they get away with their hate by being anonymous figures.

This is a surprise? Nope. We all know that blax are the most racist demographic in America. Spoiled, entitled and racist.

This isn't news. This is expected.

It's time to expose and move beyond marty king's hypocrisy and useless "movement." Eliminate entitlement and racist welfare. Eliminate affirmative action. Eliminate race based hiring quotas. (The list is endless.)

What is the justification for any university having an African-American studies department. People can major in African-American studies in many universities. What employment opportunities are there for anyone with a degree in African-American studies? It seems to me it is a put down of African-Americans. They should be majoring in business, engineering, one of the sciences, education or any of the disciplines which lead to a bright future.
