I just might be one of the poster children for “The Come Heres,” those folks who deliberately chose to live here in this remote wonderland. As a teenager fifty years ago I started describing a place in my mind, a place that eventually became known to me as Highland County, Virginia. We bought property here twenty years ago and escaped the Peoples’ Republic of Maryland permanently in 2014. I feel more at home in Highland County than anywhere I have ever been. Unfortunately, recent developments in the state’s social and political climate have led me to conclude that, if uncorrected, the time will come to leave. No, not for me to leave Highland County, but for Highland County to leave Virginia.
Little did I know that the hostile and capricious model of state government in Maryland would soon come to Virginia with a vengeance, but almost every day reveals a new abuse of common and natural law, tradition, and liberty. Over the past decade the political establishment of the region I call Virginazuela has come to dominate and inflict its vision on the Real Virginia west of the I-95 corridor and the DC Beltway. Reading The Recorder’s Legislative Reports makes me wonder if the political agenda in Richmond is being set in the faculty lounges of UC Berkeley or the presidential palace of Caracas. As satire it is first rate, as reality not so much.
It is worth noting that historically often the first action of any wannabe despot is to disarm the populace, a strategy now being enacted by this governor and his collaborators. A second action is to tinker with the processes by which they can be removed from power, and current proposals to modify elections and terms of office are ominous in that regard. The third is to criminalize criticism of the regime, so we need to keep an eye out for that.
Nowhere in history has the imposition of marxist/maoist policies (not name calling, merely describing things accurately) resulted in human flourishing, rather it has a 100% failure rate with misery always as the outcome. But, the majority in Richmond seems bound and determined to go down this road. We can see the results of such thinking in California as that state is descending into one idyllic place inhabited by the insulated elites and another place of squalor for the ever-increasing underclass, with fewer and fewer folks in between. I expect the third-world-ification of California to continue and even accelerate as the sane and productive folks who can leave will continue to leave. Following that path for Virginia will have the same result.
As Virginia has been devolving rapidly our sensible neighbors to the west have invited us to join them, perhaps the time has come for the people of Highland County to begin exploring the transition to becoming a county of West Virginia. The logistics are darned near perfect; we are a long way from Richmond, we are out of step with the Richmond ruling elites and there is mutual dislike for each other, we are no doubt considered a nuisance they would gladly abandon, we are electorally irrelevant as there are few votes to be harvested here, and we are one of the frontier counties sharing two complete county boundaries with West Virginia.
We cannot remain silent nor compliant about the inmates running the asylum in Richmond, and we must make a choice. Like it or not the historic Old Dominion is gone, perhaps to never return. If that is so, we must decide whether we will be bound to Virginazuela and live under the thumb of Richmond politicians hostile to our values and interests, or will we pursue liberty with our friends in West Virginia?

From deep behind enemy lines here in California, I agree with you. Obviously I’m on the other side of the country, but I get the sense that the rats have overreached and republicans might be able to seize control. Trump could carry Virginia. Maybe the overall trend is irreversible but over the short term I think it might just be possible.
I can only hope we take back the house then expel the democrats for abusing power and committing crimes.
