Bernie Sanders campaigned for Marxist party in Reagan era
Washington Examiner ^ | May 30, 2019 | Joseph Simonson

Posted on 02/09/2020 6:58:14 AM PST by karpov

Bernie Sanders campaigned for the Socialist Workers Party in the 1980 and 1984 presidential campaigns and was investigated by the FBI for his ties to the Marxist group.

Sanders has always played down the extent of his involvement with the party, which included radicals who praised the Soviet Union and Cuban communists, and has denied ever being a member. Asked in 1988 about his role as an SWP elector in 1980, he said: "I was asked to put my name on the ballot and I did, that’s true." In fact, his ties to the party are deep and enduring.

The 2020 Democratic presidential primary candidate and United States senator from Vermont, now 77, often scoffs at comparisons between his brand of self-described "democratic socialism" and communism. In recent years, he has said he is merely interested in having the United States look more like Sweden, a social democracy with a broad welfare state but a well-functioning private sector.

But his personal files from his time as mayor of Burlington, from 1981 to 1989, archived at the University of Vermont, show that he supported and campaigned for the communist SWP and maintained a close relationship with its senior members. While Democrats campaigned for President Jimmy Carter in 1980 and Walter Mondale in 1984, Sanders spent the Reagan era supporting fringe Marxists with no chance of reaching the White House.

In 1980, Sanders "proudly endorsed and supported" Andrew Pulley, the party's presidential candidate, who once said that American soldiers should "take up their guns and shoot their officers." Sanders was one of three electors for Pulley on the Vermont ballot, stating in a press release: "I fully support the SWP's continued defense of the Cuban revolution."

Where is the Green Party today? No media coverage.

even without the green Reds in 2000, Gore could have won florida if he'd gotten the vote of the other combined Communist-Socialist parties in Florida

The DNC is using right leaning news outlets to take out Bernie. Shame on them for letting it happen.

Bernie Sanders campaigned for Marxist party in Reagan era

And why would a communist not campaign for communists?

Look, the guy is Brooklyn Jewish communist. When I lived in Brooklyn in the 70s, they were a dime a dozen.

Why are you posting articles pointing out the obvious?

Bernie has never concealed who he is.

It IS interesting that the two most probable nominees of the Democratic Party - Bloomberg and Sanders - are not Democrats.

Ted Kennedy colluded with the KGB in 1984 to try to defeat Ronald Reagan

from 2006

Kennedy-KGB collaboration
The Washington Times - Friday, October 27, 2006

History has long since vindicated Ronald Reagan’s Cold War policy. Even Sen. Ted Kennedy, whom no one would accuse of harboring pro-Reagan sympathies, had to admit that Mr. Reagan “will be honored as the president who won the Cold War.” But opinions have not always been so united.

In his new book, “The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism,” Grove City College professor Paul Kengor sheds light on a letter written by KGB head Viktor Chebrikov to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov. The letter is dated May 14, 1983, right as the debate was heating up over Mr. Reagan’s proposed deployment of intermediate-rangrange rockets in Eastern Europe.

Most Democrats and much of the left were universally opposed to Mr. Reagan’s plan, which they argued would lead to nuclear war. Heading the list of critics was Mr. Kennedy, who had, according to the Soviet letter, sent former Sen. John V. Tunney to meet with Kremlin leaders. Chebrikov writes that Mr. Kennedy “charged Tunney to convey the following message, through confidential contacts, to… Andropov.”

According to the letter, Mr. Kennedy was concerned with “Reagan’s belligerence,” which he felt was in part the result of the president’s popularity. “The only real threats to Reagan are problems of war and peace and Soviet-American relations,” wrote Chebrikov, relaying Mr. Tunney’s message. “These issues, according to [Mr. Kennedy], will without a doubt become the most important of the [1984] election campaign.”

...Mr. Kennedy had two proposals for Andropov, according to Chebrikov. First, he asked for a meeting later that summer in order “to arm Soviet officials with explanations regarding problems of nuclear disarmament so they may be better prepared and more convincing during appearances in the USA.” Second, that “Kennedy believes that in order to influence Americans it would be important to organize … televised interviews with [Andropov] in the USA.”

If Chebrikov’s account of events is accurate, it’s clear Mr. Kennedy was actively engaging the Russians to influence the 1984 election...

Shame on them for being Democrats.

If articles like this are controlled by the DNC, then it’s nothing less than a survival tactic. They need to shake off the far left or they’re going to dissolve. It’s possible they may just sacrifice Bernie to save face and be done with it. Write 2020 off as a loss and regroup for 2024.

Either way, they have a huge internal reckoning to deal with and they need to deal with it fast...

LOL , I didn’t think it could get this good!

In saner times, this would have been the death knell for this fossilized old phony. Today, it’s a major campaign platform. The RAT party eats it up.

Marx hated his types and described them as a Bourgeois Socialists. He would have spit on BS. Uncle Joe would have put one in the back of his head and kicked him into a shallow grave. It is spelled out very clearly in the Manifesto.

There has never been a justice system built to deal with this depth of wickedness we currently see in the republic.

FUBS and the PROPAGANDISTS you rode in on. Useless eaters/parasites in a hard-working productive republic.

I think we are over-reacting to this. Lots of stalwart conservatives were once Communists (e.g. Russell Kirk, Irv Kristol, etc.). So it is possible to be a Communist idealist as a young person, and later to disavow that predilection. Bernie could claim to do that also, if he can strongly condemn communism. I don't know if he will be able to do it.
